I saw an article over at the AVS forum today about this. Just when I thought Pioneer was discontinuing their AVR's. Unveiling is supposed to be in NYC Wed. June 25th 2014. Onkyo, Integra,Denon, Marantz also have taken interest in releasing new Dolby Atmos compatible AVR's . Blu Ray discs will be released later this year in Dolby Atmos also. Apparently, Blu ray machines will be able to play these new Atmos encoded discs, so that's good new to all of us with Oppos,PS3, etc.

Pioneer denied they were getting out of the audio business and said they were going to have a lot of new product announcements around the end of June.

I'll be lazy and just ask....so hold-off on buying a new AVR? I'm going new instead of having my SC-05 repaired....

Currently, no movies are available with the Atmos soundtrack. Any Atmos playback at this time is "virtual" Atmos derived from current 5.1 or 7.1 soundtracks.

I think it is too early to be excited about but it will be nice when it matures a bit more in the market.

It sounds like the first Dolby Atmos encoded blu ray movies won't be out til Fall 2014 and more coming in 2015.

Wiki on it for the lazy guys... http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolby_Atmos

And for the edit I thought SnV did an article on it some time ago but I found this - http://www.soundandvision.com/content/dolby-atmos-movie-theater-technology-heading-home-gear

This could be really cool, the illustrations in the article put it together for me, but I'm way to lazy to look any further. :p

I was just doing my own research....I don't see this taking off with the general public. That is, they are not going to run out and buy new gear just for this as it doesn't offer that much more than is already out there. DTS Master-HD is good enough.

Once the action is on the screen, I don't notice how many channels are playing... When Iron Man 5 is playing in the future, I am not going to think, "Wow, I can hear that explosion above my head...", I am going to think..."Dang! that was a cool scene...."

I think it's time for some new Audio. Think about it, DD and DTS 5.1 have been around a very long time. Then 6.1 and 71 came out. Lately it's been Front Height and Front wide but they are not actual channels but matrix so to speak.
I'd like to see Atmos or another new style format come around and really add to the already cool formats we currently have.

So we need Atmos compatible Speakers, AVRs, and other gear from what I'am understanding from this article? I just put a **** ton of money on new gear for the HT and now this, when does it stop? I guess I will get my Dolby Atmos craving at the theatre.

I sounds like the only Atmos specific speakers are the ones that you can put on top of your existing speakers that can "simulate" having a speaker directly overhead. I'd imagine if you're actually going to put a speaker in or on your ceiling it can be any old speaker.

Yeah. Unless you happen to own an AVR that's going to get Atmos capabilities with a firmware update.

Unimpressed. 2 channel has ruined me I guess. I've heard rain pour on my head. I've heard sounds in all corners of my room. I've heard drums and flutes playing from outside the room. I've heard height cues that flow seamlessly instead of simply moving from one speaker to the next.

All this matrixing seems like a band aid for cheap surround sounds. I'm glad I won't be on the bandwagon - I couldn't afford all that speaker wire, much less the speakers themselves.
Way to make me feel like I have a junk system.

You guys are missing the point. This Atmos stuff (not to be confused with the Greek Monastery on Mt. Athos?), lol, is a way of bringing your neighborhood together and also getting closer to your Gov't drone program, i.e., Atmos speakers can be put OUTSIDE your house on your neighbor's roof, porch, walkway as well as in your room? And for those moving outdoor sounds, they'll be mounted on DRONES that will be programmed to fly by your house at the "appropriate" moment in the movie which will be streamed online and monitored by the NSA as you watch it watch you!

Imagine 64 to 128 DMSs (Drone mounted speakers) able to move to whatever position the soundtrack requires. None of this SISSY FIXED speaker stuff for the FUTURE! Atmos is NOT thinking BIG ENOUGH! The future is not your home theater; it is the theater of Zamyatin's WE!

I've always thought of the amount of speakers you listen to somehow relates to the type of **** you watch. Two channel listening is equivalent to a straight sex, two individual **** scene. Multichannel is a sex party. An orgy, if you will.

Yep, I like my surround sound and the improved sound quality of BDs, but we are few and dwindling. I am actually surprised they are pushing a new format when so few people own/rent BDs and streaming doesn't even take advantage of the lossless codexes.

Money goes a lot further when you're worried about two speakers instead of seven... and you've got a nice system, its just built for a different purpose.
I never thought I'd be on this side of the fence when I started this hobby. The deeper I get into 2 channel, the less I enjoy multi-channel.
Yeah, it takes a lot to do both at a decent level. So much out of the pocket(What pockets?$$ I'm broke!) and so much explaining (and sneeking gear in the house) to the Mrs. about why the system keeps changing.

Heck, even the kids have asked why I keep swapping out stuff. This will make the 5th receiver in two years. I already know how crazy I might get with 2 ch if I can get the wife back to work....LOL!

...but someday I would love to own a home again and have a HT, a 2 Ch system, and multi zone music in other spaces.

Atmos would be cool in a theater. In my HT? I am still rocking 5.1 and content.

Lossless audio is where its at, the rest is all about the right setup for your room. Be it stereo, 5.1, 7.2, etc....

I have 9 in-wall locations plotted, and 4 in-ceiling, in addition to the two spots occupied by my 1.2TL's. I can't imagine the need for more than that in 22x16 space. If Atmos is going to succeed in the home, they need a disco ball with speakers in it that you can hang in the middle of the room, IMHO.

John, I've always wondered this... do in-wall speakers image as well as a normal speaker? With floorstander or bookies, you guys are always saying to pull them out away from the walls and angle them in for proper sound and imaging. Can you put an angle on in-wall speakers? I've never seen behind their grills, so I didn't know if they are mounted at a certain angle or pitch, or are adjustable in some way.

Lots of times you can angle the tweeter. The woofer section you cant normally...

You've got one heck of a HT system there John! It will be interesting to hear just how much better or not the Dolby Atmos system sounds. If you're already able to run Neo X movies , how much of a difference is it compared to 7.1?
