John Mayer - Room For Squares [SACD]

    f501a2c008a0495cb1e8c010.L._AA240_.jpg

The first time I heard this album and "Heavier Things", I was not very impressed. The SACDs of these two changed my mind. There's a couple of "pop" tunes on this one...but they are still enjoyable because the recording is excellent and this is one very good SACD. I think I have gained an appreciation as I listen to him more. Mayer is an excellent musician with some nice jazz and blues roots and that really shows up on cuts like "Neon". I like some of the cuts on this album that never made the airwaves. Not up to the level Continuum or Try [John Mayer Trio] but it is still good stuff, especially on SACD.

    Nanci Griffith - Ruby's Torch

    414tzv2k0lL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

A departure from her typical Tex-Folkabilly genre. In additon to a singer, she is well known as a Texas folk songwriter...but these are all ballads with most of them being covers. Her unique voice is the star here. This is very well recorded (as most of her albums are) and absolutely great album IMO. If you like Nanci, you will definitely like this one. If you've never heard her...and are looking for something a little different, look it up on Amazon or Allmusic.com and consider giving it a listen.

SQ is pretty good, but I wish it was more dynamic.

Wynton Marsalis - Live at the Village Vanguard

A professional trumpet player I met at a Martin Logan get together put me on to this box set. It is an affordable 7 CD set with ~8 hours of music recorded over a four year period. (I paid $22 new for it at Amazon). Some folks say it is the purest jazz he has ever done, and showcases his as well as the bands talents. The recording quality is very good for a live venue. Reminds me of Jazz At The Pawnshop where you can hear the crowd, tinkle of glasses. High marks, highly recommended.
