IMO, rather the room boosts or cancels bass, some just don't like as much bass as others. Then there are the bass freaks with their multiple 18" infinite baffle subs trying to reach 120 db at 5 HZ!

Usually the room cancels AND boosts bass (peaks and nulls). This is true for all rooms and because of this it hides the music within those peaks and nulls. We want to accurately control this phenomenon and not let the room just decide what we hear. I definitely agree that some people just don't like more bass than others, but I have really never heard anyone hear a linear bass response and say that's too much bass! But that's besides the point. The solution to this problem again is: EQ or room treatments. Peaks and nulls are detractors from the music, and if one wants less or more bass, leaving the peaks and nulls there isn't really an option if you want to get the most out of the rig. The real option to tailor the bass response is to create a house curve: a gently rising or falling bass response so that all frequencies are audible and nothing is loss and you get the bass response you truly like. Some may like a rising hump in the midbass or on the low end as a house curve.

As for those bass freaks, you have to give it to them though, if they can do 120db at 5hz, they can do all the other frequencies with impact, clarity and plenty of headroom and music has gotta sound good in a room with good bass ;).

if you want real low lows then grab an 18 crossed over at 80 for reinforcement ..... but I do listen to a very broad array of music ...
