Will this be a problem? I DynaMatted my PS . . .

My Cary . . . my sweet little pre . . . my SLP-98 . . .
Today I Dynamatted the Power Supply cover and it gets quite warm. There are no stock openings/holes for ventilation. Prior to being modded, I didn't notice any excessive heating, but then again it was in a different location . . .
Thoughts?

p.s. I was into the "I Dynamat Everything" mode . . . Maybe not such a great idea?? IDUNNO . . .

What's inside the box? The only issue I can think of is if the box itself is used as some sort of heatsink, but I doubt that's the case.Political Correctness'.........defined

The power supply box on the right is what seems to be getting warmer than it should. Pix suck, but you get the idea. No heat sinks at all or ventilation openings, unlike the good Aleph 30 (that will need to be upgraded soon).AC Regenerator PS Audio PerfectWave Power Plant 10

Owners manual refers to the black box as a power pack. It has an On/Off switch and connects to the "body" of the preamp through an umbilical cord . . . I defer to you folks in the "know"

Ok, well there are some heatsinks, but they are on the outside above and below the cord. Those heatsinks are mounted to the case, so you can expect heat transfer. By adding the Dynamat it would hamper heat dispersion.
I'd still like to know what is inside, can you take a pic?Political Correctness'.........defined

I'm curious why you did this? What's the benefit? Is the power supply noisy?Dan

I didn't think it would be detrimental. The really weird thing is that after playing tunes last night (and for quite a while), the power pack did not get anywhere near as warm as the night before.
The first pic is the end where the PC is attached

I've seen almost "everything" you can imagine covered with this material on this site, sometimes it's almost like watching an old peddler selling Dr. Excelsior's "cure all" elixir out of his covered-wagon!
Then again, people sometimes "stumble" onto something that works by pure accident because no one thought of applying it "there" before?

I'm not seeing anything to concern yourself with. Like I said before, those heatsinks will transfer heat to the case and the transformers will also generate some heat. Unless the case is hot to point you don't want to touch it, no biggie.I'm curious why you did this? What's the benefit? Is the power supply noisy?
Airborn and physical vibrations affect the signal. Applying Dynamat Extreme is an excellent way to deal with that issue. If that were mine, I would have applied Dynamat Extreme to the transfomers as well.Political Correctness'.........defined

The system has been running for 3-4 hours now and No Excessive heating . . . Why would it have been so Very warm the first time after Dynamatting? I don't get it
F1 . . . see anything in there of interest?
I wonder if there is a way to upgrade/improve the power pack or umbilical? Cary offers nothing in those termsAC Regenerator PS Audio PerfectWave Power Plant 10

Hard to say.
Just the usual stuff.
There's always a way to upgrade. :cheesygrin:Political Correctness'.........defined

Interesting. I didn't realize this was an issue with external power supplies. Would it not be more beneficial to use some kind of exterior Isolator? Is this how the Dynamat is applied? I didn't see it in the pics.
It's an issue with a lot of audio gear, be it an amp, pre amp, CDP, etc. Chassis/case and component damping is one of the things you pay for in high end gear. For example, Joule pre amps use a unique suspension system to isolate the signal board from vibration and the chassis/case are covered in a damping material.
Yes, good feet or other isolation devices are always a benefit, but if the chassis/case are thin gauge steel it'll still ring, so applying Dynamat Extreme would still be a good idea.
It would be applied to the interior of the chassis/case wherever there is bare metal. Of course, this is more important with thin steel than it is with heavy gauge aluminum.Political Correctness'.........defined
