The Lord Of The Rings on blu-ray will put your system through its paces pretty well, long, but gives you time to ajust and learn what is woking and what isnt, action, loud orchestral music, quieter dialogue scenes, it has a good bit of everything in it, This is my opinion though, others may have better advice to chime in.2 Channel(work in progress):DAC: Schiit modi 2 uberAmp:Parasound 1200 MK IISub:RBH 1010-SEP Speakers: Monitor 5A peerlesscurrently running some krk rokit 3g since the HK pre outs died and i need to start breaking everything down to move in a couple monthsHeadphones:Source: tidalDAC: schiit modius epre: schiit sysAmp: AQ dragonfly black/ schiit magni2 Cans: Velodyne V-True, Grado SR225i, sennheiser x drop gaming headsetPC:DAC: schiit modius e(over spdif)pre: schiit sysspeakers: prenous eris 5 xtSub: Earthquake Sound MiniMe-P63most of my comments are passing on of info, im a noob, im just trying to help how i can, if im wrong or out of place to comment, dont hesitate to let me know "WITH WILLING HEARTS AND SKILLFUL HANDS, THE DIFFICULT WE DO AT ONCE, THE IMPOSSIBLE TAKES A BIT LONGER, WITH COMPASSION FOR OTHERS. For AQ I will pop Master and Commander in. That disc will give the sub a real workout during the ship battle scenes.

+1 on Lord Of The Rings movies. I also like the new Man Of Steel on blu-ray as a HT work out, though I found I had to keep the volume control on the remote near by. For music, concerts like Jeff Beck Live At Ronnie Scott's and The Eagles in Melbourne are good bets on blu-ray. -

I am due to watch Lord of the Rings in my movie rotation. I will have to give this trilogy a run this week. -

Is it common to have a large dispersion among low and high sound levels in movies? -

No, it's not that normal. I have heard a few complaints on Man Of Steel about the mix being a little too low in spots (with dialog, etc) or too high in spots (with some of the action) depending on how you look at it. I found myself tinkering with the volume a couple times. Action scenes were pretty awesome though. -
If the LFE is your game to show off your HT, the #1 rated movie for ultra low bass over on AVS is Cloverfield...if you can make it through the "shaky cam"....

Love me some LFE but absolutely despise shaky cam. Ha. What instrument is used in Cloverfield to get the LFE? -
The depth charges in U-571 are a true sub workout...

I just rewatched this the other night, and I felt the action scenes were to loud when compared to the dialogue. Of course, that is just my opinion. I'm sure there are others who want it louder. All in all though, I liked the movie.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

Exactly my experience too. Turn it up for dialogue then it's too loud during the action scenes. -

Not sure what they used to get the low frequencies of the monster...I know I had to straighten a picture or two after the movie, and my subs don't go THAT low. You can usually pick up the Cloverfield blu-ray in bargain bins for 5-8 bucks. -

They usually have it at Gohastings around 2 or 3 dollars used. I may give it a try. -
Mr. and Mrs. Smith on Bluray
-
All Add
Star Wars EP1 - Darth Maul vs Obi One. This is an amazing clean clear scene which really shows off the surround and dynamics of ones system.
The matrix- Scene 29 , you'll understand the nature of what a 5.1 system can do.
Gladiator- This movie got 6.1 on the map IMO as it has amazing wrap around make you feel like your on the Sands with them.
Newer Movies
Thor- great surround and well recorded
Avengers - when Iron Man and Thor battle
Man of Steel - when Superman flies for the first time.
All of the Iron Man movies
Transformers is also another good one for special effects sounds. They did a hell of a job on the first one which I even have on HD DVD.
Music look no further to show off your home theater system then Dave Mathews and Tim Reynolds Live at Radio City. Truly one of the most amazing sounding Blu ray Disc's made movie or Music. First time I heard this was at a Customers house after I installed a impressive system. I sat down and was in awe. I picked it up after that job.Dan
My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -

+1 even in the orignal DVD version the depth charges and the bells ringing in the opening scene.

Indeed! ^^^^
Since I did not see it posted here yet, I have to give a nod to WOTW... "Well there's something down there, and it's moving!"
My .02 for concert DVDs is AC/DC Stiff Upper Lip; advance to The Jack and sit back and let it play through to the end of Back In Black. So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

That is a great list. I check in on the sub forum over there on a regular basis, and those dudes are pretty serious about their subs.

For a quick demo of my system: Forrest Gump, firefight in Vietnam, Band of Brothers Episode 7, shelling outside Foy 31 minutes in, and Saving Private Ryan, the landing at Normandy.
For full length:
Man of Steel
All the recent Marvel films

The one I have been using is Dark Knight BR…
or Yellow submarine BRv for other reasons. -
Here's one I know NOBODY will mention for (music) low-end: Migration by Dave Grusin (CD review at http://www.audioholics.com/music-reviews/dave-grusin-migration-1990).
My movie recommendation has already been mentioned: Tron Legacy (the soundtrack is quite good as well; again CD review at http://www.audioholics.com/music-reviews/tron-legacy). Honorable mention to The Dark Knight (but not TDKR).
BTW, I don't use a sub; I use my Amp to route the lows to my Monitor 10's and they sound great!Yamaha RX-A2050 AVR (5.0.2); LG OLED77C2 4K TV(4) Polk Monitor 10B's w/SoniCaps, Mills, and RDO-194 tweets (R/L F/R)(2) Polk RC80i (Top Middle)Polk CS300 center channelAnalog: B&O TX2 Turntable, Nakamichi Cassette Deck 1Digital: Pioneer CLD-99 Elite LD, Panasonic DMP-UB900 UHD Blu-RayBedroom: Arylic Up2Stream AMPv3 driving Polk Monitor 4's w/peerless tweets
