Avalon or Maxima

Hey all - just looking for opinions on the above vehicles. Company cars will be available soon and was thinking about getting one. Either would be a 2009 or 2010 with about 75,000 miles. I know which way I am leaning but, as always, can never get too much information.

    Maxima all the way.

They're both FWD unfortunately, but the Maxima will still handle better. The Avalon is just an oversized Camry with a nicer interior. I have nothing against Toyota, am looking out my windows at our 2010 4Runner right now, but I like the Maxima better.

It doesn't sound like you have other options, but for in the same ballpark price I'd take a G37 over a Maxima any day of the week, though the price difference may be bigger than I'm thinking in the used market.

The 2010 Maxima seems like a solid car, and decently styled for a cheaper Nissan.

Check out the Passat V6 from 2006 to 2008. 280 hours power, paddle shifters and a sport mode.

Would love other selections - however, I can buy these at low trade in value. Wouldn't come close on the open market. I really like the look of the Maxima but know the Avalon would be a solid choice too. It may come down to the ones available and which are in better shape.

The Avalon MAY be a bit more reliable, but not by enough to sway my decision. Either will be a solid car. If you're looking for that cushy ride then go with the Avalon, if you want something with better performance then go with the Maxima. The Maxima is still very comfortable though, it's not like a BMW or anything.

I've driven both from around that time and it's nove even close IMO.

Maxima all the way; not sure but check to see if the years available will have the CVT transmission. It takes a bit to get used; don't really feel the shift points at all. I love the look and styling of the Maxima and my brother has one that has been very reliable. In terms of appearance it destroys the Avalon IMO.

Drive each one. Pick the one that feels the best. The used Maxima is a lot of car with 290 hourse power.

    Driven both.
If you're about to keel over or are afraid to touch the pedal, Avalon it is.

If you have a pulse, Maxima all the way.

I've driven both EXTENSIVELY. I don't know what you Maxima lovers are thinking. Everything about the Avalon is superior IMO. I own a 2011 Avalon and it's wonderful.

"Oversized Camry"?? Really?? Now the Lexus 350 is on a Camry Chassis.

Now the Avalon may not look sporty, but it was never meant to be.

They are starting to hit the market in other parts of the country. An 09 Maxima, 11 Avalon, and a 10 Taurus (didn't know Taurus would be an option). They each have about 70 to 80 thousand miles and bidding starts at about $11,000 . Hopefully I will get similar selection when they become available in this area.

Ah, I really like the Taurus as well, especially the SHO model. The Taurus has a more cockpit style feel on the inside, I personally like it alot. If seeing those pictures side by side isn't a slam-dunk case for the Maxima over the Avayawn then I don't know what is.

Again, as evidenced on here by some of the more memorable fights with jstas, I'm a Toyota guy, I"m just not a fan of their Camry or Avalon models.

    +1 Carl.

After working in both Nissan and Toyota service facilities, I'd say the Toyota would be my choice without question. Don't care for the CVT transmissions in the Nissans at all.

It's also been my experience that Toyotas hold their resale value very well.

    - I wish the SHO was an option. It's an SEL but it is AWD - which can come in kind of handy here in Colorado. Thanks everyone for your input. I have always loved the look of the Maxima but then read all the good stuff about the Avalon. I even tried to figure out which one had a better sound system - both about the same on the base models. Don't think I can go wrong with either one for the price.

You really can't go wrong with either one. As much as I prefer the Maxima it really comes down to personal choice.

I take issue with statements in this thread like 'everything about the Avalon is superior' and 'if you like driving the Avalon then you must be dead', because they're both extremes and neither is true.

The fact is that the Maxima is more sporty while the Avalon has a more cushy rude and both are well built cars, beyond that it comes down to your preference.

Well, it took a little longer than I thought it would but 2 Maximas finally hit the local market. One black and one grey. I went with the grey one and picked it up Monday. I think I am going to like it. :) It has a little pop to it - I found out it has the same motor as the 350Z.

Going to be driving a lot? Especially long distances? Avalon will be quieter and smoother riding, less fatiguing when your **** is in the seat a lot. Toyota/Lexus is hard to beat when it comes to NVH isolation. Consistently some of the quietest most comfortable cars to drive.

Also easier to enjoy music or hear a phone call, have a conversation etc...

Before anybody goes off calling me old or soft, I'm 30, healthy, and this is what I do on the weekends...

    Have fun with that thing.

Btw, the latest version of the Avalon is pretty sporty, so you may get to drive one in a few years.
