Sure is sad. God please comfort the parents that lost there children today. It saddens me to hear of such tragedy and may God bless the little ones souls. I think these graphic video games should be banned and lets quit pumping these teenage kids full of depression and anxiety medication because they can't cope with life, or be told no when they want something. It's a messed up society we live in.

I don't take offense to anything on the internet so no harm, no foul. I'm not saying specifically that shooting 5 year olds is society but tragedy and all these weapons make it easy for the insane/imbalanced people to do what they do. Don't take it literal...

First recorded school massacre occurred in 1927 with sadly many more strewn across the last century and leading up to the present time. The inception of this horrifying timeline no doubt coincides with the proliferation of school campuses evolving from the one-room "schoolhouse" layout for K-12 education. In other words, the potential had always existed since as far back as one can imagine, but not so much the opportunity.

It's mostly a case of life imitating "art". Hollywood & video games are generally accepted as what likely spawned the Columbine school shootings and the ones that followed. Sadly, this time of year is forever ruined for many innocent people.

There ya go....sociopaths plus assault weapons equals unspeakable horrors. Sadly, this will continue to happen every handful of years. Gonna have to put armed guards in schools to help combat it.

From time to time, I have people ask when I'm going to have children. My reply...I love my children so much that there's no way in hell I would bring them into this screwed up insane world and subject them to it!

Senseless tragedy. For someone to shoot little innocent kids like that is un-imaginable. My heart goes out to the parents and relatives of these children. It will be a long PTSD healing process for many from that town.

Just a tip my good man, the world has always been screwed up. You just get the benefit of knowing more about it and sooner in todays world.

Personally, when a child is lost it's possibly the worst thing that can happen to anyone. This is one of those events that you simply never fully recover from. A child lost to a fatal disease, cancer, thats one thing as terrible as it is. A child lost this way....thats a whole other level of evil.

This destroyed my day, screaming babies........

Schools are going to have to improve security. We have patients at the VA I work at with a potential for violence. Such people are flagged on their digital records which can be seen at every VA hospital. These people have a armed police escort with then where ever they go in the facility. If the school had had Police escorts for everyone entering the building that did not work there this would not have happened. Don't blame the guns that is a Politician's excuse for not doing what is actually needed.

The topic always turns to Guns, it should really look at the state of Mental Health Care and Diagnosis in this country. We should also take a long look at the deteriation of our Culture in this country

He had two handguns and they found a .223-caliber rifle in his car. No assault weapons.

There's always been people on the edge. But the trend towards isolation and
gaming violence seems to have pushed it up a notch.
I remember working 20 years ago with a guy that was off a bit.
One of the other guys said " I vote him most likely to come back and
kill all his co-workers." About a year after he was laid off, he blew his brains out.
I bet most people here have known or worked with someone like this.
The question becomes, how can we head this kind of thing off early
    before it comes to this?

No matter what type of law or Utopian society you think you can create, this type of behavior will happen just the same. If not a gun, then a bomb, which for what it's worth can be instructed how to make over the internet these days and with household every day items to boot.

It will be interesting to see what this kids e-mails reveal, which the police have already said reveal alot.

God bless and prayers to those affected. Can't imagine their pain right now. Let's stay focused folk's, freedom has risks--we're all aware of that, and since we are Americans, we obviously accept those risks.

God, give these families the strength and comfort to make it through this senseless act. Hold the victims close, so that they never feel the pain of this day again. Amen.

What world do you live in where any of this makes sense for elementary schools, especially those that are on very limited budgets? What school board is going to approve paying the full-time salary and benefits of a police officer - a salary greater than that of nearly anyone else employed by the school - to stand guard at every elementary school in every school district? And that armed officer is there to escort anyone and everyone who doesn't work there while they are in the building? Does that include everyone? The son who has brought his mother her forgotten lunch? The plumber there to fix the sink? The young woman there to apply for a job in the cafeteria? Would this also mean that the school could only have one outside visitor at a time? Also, before we install this level of security at elementary schools, don't you think we should also cover the high schools and middle schools? How about the colleges? Where do you draw the line? My point is that this approach would be impossible to implement. There is no community in this country that could support such a program.

Now, regarding your statement about the VA: How is it that individuals come to be labeled to have a "potential for violence"? That process, even at its minimum, would be very expensive and difficult - impossible - to maintain. Is every patient seen there evaluated by a psychiatrist prior to being able to be seen for other medical care? What criteria are used to evaluate these patients? There are LOTS of VA patients who are affected to some degree with disorders such as PTSD, depression, paranoid schizophrenia (and other psychoses), etc. and MANY are very proficient in the handling of weapons. Where is the threshold, and how was it established, for designating any particular visitor as a concern? And how about the concerns of physician/patient privilege and the effects (socially, professionally, etc.) on the lives of those labeled as being potentially dangerous? This could certainly have the potential to detroy the lives of returning vets just trying to get help for their healthcare needs. In all likelihood, such a system would probably have the effects opposite of those desired (ie. patients in great need of care opting against receiving it, for fear of the repercussions of simply attempting to do so).

LOTS of questions with very elusive answers, if in fact, there even are practical answers.

SICK.. SICK...SICK. My eyes fill up with tears every time I see or hear this.

People will do sick unthinkable things to other people adult or child. They will use what ever is available eg. gun ,
    knife, ax, etc....

I remember 10 years ago this man enterd a home brutally raped and murdered a 15 year old girl 20 minutes from
Jasper, I drove past that house many a time. This sick **** after he raped her started beating her in the head
with a five pound weight then cut her throat to the point of slicing her wind pipe. If that wasn't enough he cut her
open and pulled out her inards then stapped her several times. This girl little sister heard and seen it all.

Now what person in their right mind will do **** like this? EVIL !!

My heart goes out to all on this dark day GOD BLESS and give your children a hug and tell them that you Love
    them. I did and cried.

P.S. The man that did the above still has not payed for this.

Blah, Blah, Blah,Blah, Teekay ask a parent who will have to bury their 6 year old child about school security. Your comment about the Department of Veterans affairs is way off base. for your information each VA has a professional board that sets the behavioral flags, the recommendations are submitted by professionals for observed behavior which includes suicide attempts, and these flags are reviewed annually. As for confidentially I am a medical records administrator I am bound by honor, oath, and law to protect the privacy of my fellow Veterans. Unlike the world outside the VA system there is no stigma put on treatment for mental health concerns it is part of the package.

I grieve for the Parents. I cannot image what they are going through right now. I will say no more.
