How would you not screw them into the bottom?
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

Well you could buy some granite or marble slabs (like 2" thick) and drill the spikes into the slabs. And sit the SDA's on top.

If you live in GA/SC I can hook you up on that idea! Totally free too! Well...you'd have to buy the spikes and drill the slabs. I'd provide the slabs.

That would look awesome. 3" thick black granite slabs nickle plated spikes.
Another idea would be like 4 5" diameter x 1" thick steel billets with 3 spikes in each one

That's really not the same as spiking the actual speakers.
would like to keep them original

Why? Adding spikes is a smart thing to do for many reasons.

These look really nice and are stupid cheap. They remind me of the spikes Mye Sound use to sell.

    http://www.diysoundgroup.com/accessories/spikes/spike-two.html

Adona sells some high quality spikes, while Parts Express sells some less expensive ones.

Bottom line, it is better to spike than not.

Yeah I am aware of that. I was just giving an alternative to him since he does not want to drill into the cabinets.

Bugs, you are not going to hurt them by installing spikes nor detract from their value. Spiking them is the best way to go. Spiking some marble slabs with them on top is the next best thing to do (imo) if they are gonna be on carpet.

I just bought two 2"x18"x12" granite slabs to set my SDA 1Cs on, and also I drilled holes in the cabinets and put spikes on them.

    Drill them! They'll love it!

Ok, instead of wanting to keep them original, I should now drill spikes in the bottom and gut the insides like a fish? replace the tweets and punch holes in the mids like Punch-a-bunch on the Price Is Right?

How about spikes on hardwood floors, do they make as much a difference, and how do you protect the floors? I've been thinking of adding them to my speakers for awhile now.

Why would you NEED spikes on a hardwood floor?

The whole point of spikes is to pierce carpet and pad, so the speaker is actually resting on the hard floor. Concrete floor is best...but any hard surface is acceptable.

Point (literally) being, you don't want a squishy gasket between the speaker cabinet and the actual floor. No carpet, no rug...pretty much no problem.

Put a quarter under the spike. That's the cheap way to do it. Otherwise, you can get spikes that have a base to sit on.

So I can get away with platforms with spikes? Carpet with concrete underneath

Mmmmmm, not true. The point of spikes is to decouple the speaker from the floor, so that the point of contact between the speaker and the floor is as small as possible. This way, the speaker cabinet doesn't transfer resonance to the floor. This is very much necessary with wood floors. It is correct that you do not want the spikes directly on the wood floors or you can damage them. But they make base pieces designed to go under the spikes to protect the wood floor. Or... use a quarter.

    Besides pennies tarnish.

Actually the opposite is true. The spikes, when properly installed and leveled with equal pressure on each, effectively couple the speaker to the floor. The floor, having much greater mass, will absorb the vibrations from the speaker.
To de-couple the speaker, you would need some form of rubber or spring mounting. This would allow the speaker to vibrate with very little being tranmitted to the floor. De-coupling also works in the opposite direction. For example, some people prefer to de-couple their turntable, so that vibrations from the floor or the structure itself aren't picked up by the stylus.
An exagerated example of this would be the engine in your car. Car manufacturers de-couple the engine from the chassis via rubber mounts or suspension links with rubber bushings. If the engine were directly coupled to the chassis, in other words bolted directly, every vibration produced by the engine would be transmited to the chasis and car body. In addition, car manufacturers used to de-couple the car body from the frame with rubber mounts. The effect was cumulative. The car body was de-coupled from the frame, and the frame was de-coupled from the engine.

To add to my last post, the "Bass Brace" used on the larger SRS models, is an example of coupling. The brace, which is a solid threaded rod, directly couples the rear of the speaker cabinet to the wall behind it. The wall, which in theory has greater mass and stiffness, will absorb and dissapate vibrations from the speaker. The ultimate coupling would be properly installed spikes, and the "Bass Brace".
