I live at the Jersey Shore my friend lost his house. He woke up at 10.30pm with water up to his matress. Seaside is just about gone, gas stations are out of fuel, its a mess and most dont have power. I am running on a generator, I stocked on supplies Friday. We got light damage our fence came down, some roof shingles but everyone is okay. Prayers to others go out.

Many gas stations on the island are out of fuel too. So glad to have a diesel daily driver right now...

Your right, Chicago sure isn't for the faint of heart, considering we already surpassed the amount of murders from last year. I was just joking, I know alot of history around the east coast, from our founding to the civil war era, etc. Pretty darn interesting stuff too, I wonder if any of this history is actually taught in schools out there ? Should be if it's not. Hard to get a grasp on where your going if you never knew where you've been.

I learned this history in NYC grade school. Out my office window, I see school kids everyday touring the historic sites around the Battery and of course the Statue of Liberty. btw, my mom and dad are both from Joliet. The majority of my relatives currently live in Illinois.

I haven't logged in here much lately, but I just wanted to check on all my Polk forum friends who were in the path of that storm. The damage looks terrible from the pictures on the news, especially NY/NJ. Glad to see some of you posting on here again! And though I know that it's going to take a long time to clean up the mess, I hope that things will begin to return to normal soon.

Sorry to hear that man, this state is or has been in the toilet for awhile now. Guess the same can be said for many others too. Anyway, glad to see some history being taught in your neck of the woods, out here it's just a passing footnote.

I was reading that they are already discussing whether or not to rebuild some of the hardest hit areas. I think the quote was "If we are going to spend an ungodly sum of money to rebuild, let's try to spend it wisely..." Yeah, fat chance of that!

If you look at it pragmatically, it does make sense. Regardless of the Koch brothers efforts to disguise and discredit the facts, our environment is changing (sic GLOBAL WARMING!!!). With that change is going to come ever increasing occurrences of storms of ever increasing intensity. We need to think about that. Seriously...

Eh Antny, if climate patterns are changing, and I'm one to agree with that, sending a bunch of beuracrats more money isn't going to change it. I know of no power on earth that can change planetary weather patterns. Aside from that, you have to adopt to the changes, like we have in the past when climate patterns change.

Man adopted to glaciers, and tropical weather, not necessarily in the same geographical locations either. Palm trees may look nice on Long Island anyway. Snow in the Southern states.....yeah baby, trade in that redneck hot tub pickup for a snowmobile.....with a hot tub of course. I wouldn't mind a few vineyards around Chicago myself.

Seriously, weather patterns change all the time, any weather guy will tell you that from a historical point of view. Permanent drastic change happens on such a long time line, I see no worry from it. People weren't screaming about global warming when earlier, more powerful hurricanes came up the east coast or the Gulf. Or earthquakes that demolished San Fran. Volcano eruptions that wiped out countries, droughts that killed off farm animals and crops, all with little to no impact from a human population. To think a few less aerasol cans, less car emisions, and plastic bags, along with sending money to Washington will change all that goes against common sense.....imho anyway.

Eh, maybe so CNH, but God forbid we discuss anything of importance around here aside from Beer, TV shows, recipes and an assortment of Hottie pics. Not that I don't like all of those things, it's just that sometimes the brain needs a tad more stimulus from time to time. Or am I asking too much for adult conversation ? We've had many long conversations stretching over many pages without name calling and knuckleheads in the past. Maybe the maturity level of the forum has fallen ? Or people in general ? I dunno man, we keep talking about the dumbing down of America yet keep it alive by limiting conversation. Yes I know , all sorts of other sites to discuss and I do, but the clubhouse can and has been an area for such discussion in the past......well, until the boneheads start with the name calling which promptly gets it shut down. Polk has always given us lots of room for varied discussion as long as things remain civil. Thats the key.....civil. Guess thats asking too much these days for civil conversation. Just my .02 on it is all.

Back to Sandy......has anyone asked, Where the heck is Fema ? I'm seeing stories of dumpster diving, no food or gas in some area's, people fighting over supplies, whats up with that ? This is practicaly their back yard, no ?

Lines for gas stations are up to a half mile long. There are even tremendous lines for gas stations without gas and waiting for a tanker to arrive. Violence at stations, and rumors of Marshal Law in the Rockaway area.

First off, this storm was not due to "climate change" or "global warming" or polar ice caps melting or the ozone hole or whatever the crackpot BS of the day is.

    http://www.npr.org/2012/10/31/164055672/is-climate-change-responsible-for-sandy

Secondly, I have a hard time believing that the workers were turned away because they were "non-union". They went to Sleazeside which is still mostly under water and they probably had all the help they could fit on the island right now. On top of that, most of South Jersey will be powered by tonight and the southern most barrier islands will have power restored by Saturday. So the NJ power companies are sending their own crews to the central and northern areas and basically doubling up what they already have there.

If any crews got turned away it's because the work is already nearing completion or the help is needed more elsewhere. This just sounds like trumped up [political BS meant to sway election votes. It's actually rather disgusting that this news was even focused on without being vetted and even more disgusting that people are actually running with it.

I agree, this election will be over soon. So until then let's try not to spread misinformation so as to just be fair to all parties involved. And as far as any "one" storm being or not being the result of climate change. Good luck with that. Science is rooted in Data analysis, lots and lots and lots of data. This storm is a piece of that data at best.

People blocked from helping because they were non-union? Now we're doing stand-up comedy here? lol

Here's hoping that all of you who may still be homeless and powerless are OK and that everyone will work "together" to help you get back to normal ASAP!

Constantine, this type of storm has happened before and it's not the largest we've ever seen here. It's the largest since we've been actively monitoring, recording and predicting weather but it's not the largest one we've seen. This was not a global warming event and anyone who tries to politicize such a disaster like this as such is an idiot. The only difference between now and previous storms that have wiped the barrier islands off the map is that we have much more access to news and media surrounding it. Otherwise this was another really bad storm like the Ash Wednesday storm and many that came before and after it. We just got to see it live instead of waiting for grainy 8mm footage from a helicopter days later. Add the media F.U.D. and fear-mongering to the mix and of course, how could anyone in any other time experience things as bad or worse as we are right now?

Comedy ? Tell ya pal, wish it was. Here's a good rundown on how it all played out.

    http://www.theblaze.com/stories/who-is-telling-the-truth-nj-utility-says-it-didnt-block-non-union-help-alabama-utility-contradicts-their-statement/

Now want to talk about comedy ? How about Mayor bloom bugger running a marathon and supplying them with generators while the citizens without power freeze. Half **** backwards if you ask me. Someone has their priorities all screwed up. I realize the city can't possibly supply enough generators for everyone, but you think the ones they do have can maybe go to senior citizens, retirement homes, or others in need.

Again I ask, where is Fema ? Shouldn't they be supplying some basics by way of helicopter to those stranded ? I was watching the news the other day and Christie was on from Jersey. The stupid reporter asked the dumbest question to a governor of a demolished state, obviously tired from being up for a long time. " So what about the presidential election Governor ? " Christie to his credit, blasted the reporter. Said he could care less about politics at this time. He said more but lets leave it at that. Now in one state you have a governor who is hands on trying to get help to people. In another state next door, you have a Mayor more concerned about running a marathon. Kinda puts things into perspective wouldn't you say ?

BTW, kudos to all the volunteers, people from other states flocking in to lend a hand. Thats the america I know and love and couldn't be more proud of these people/companies that are helping those in need.

No one was ever turned away from working because they were non union. They were given a document from the IBEW and got the wrong idea. Talk about BS...

And just to clarify, I didn't claim this was a result of global warming. I did say that storms are going to increase in frequency and intensity because of it.
