Here is the inside of my 1986 Adcom GFA-555 amplifier. I have re-built much of it including the filter caps, common bus bar, electrolytic capacitors, etc. I have some Sanyo transistors coming to replace the ones on the input board.

That is correct. That is the date they started making these amplifiers. I remember purchasing my SDA2s in 1986 and the salesman trying to sell me the Adcom gear. Now Adcom has started selling a remake of the 555 but not the same animal. I don't know when they stopped making the 555 but my circuit boards are all stamped 1986. The 555 II came out in the early 90s I believe.Mr. Sharpe wrote: »The 555 is from 1986???SDA2BTL

Mr. Swauger's Macs have got panache! One of the nice things about the C8s, if memory serves, is a pretty diverse set of playback EQ characteristics for records; great for pre-LP-era collectors (although they, of course, don't need stereo!).

Thanks, Mr. H, these belong to Polk #1 along with two Mac amps that are extremely rare. I haven't started on those. The C4 has an interesting arrangement for the power supply. The preamp itself has an AC power cord, but then there's an octal socket that routes the AC to an external box that has a transformer and tube rectifier. Then the DC goes back to the preamp chassis and gets filtered. The filament voltage routes from the external supply to the chassis, gets rectified (one unit has a selenium rectifier and the other one has two diodes) and filtered. The phono has variable cartridge loading as well as the different playback EQs. If you were playing a Columbia record there's one setting, a London has another. Very cool!
I was looking at an ad for an early Victrola that talked about it coming with three different needles. One was for "brighter" sound, one was a "warmer" sound and the third was more "dynamic" and "active".
Sound familiar? -
D'oh - C4s! Sorry!

Sure does the big box makes it so I only need need 260 watts per pair to reach xmax.
I guess my cornor loading gives my like 95 db efff (1 meter 1 watt) and on a graph its real flat only down 9db at 20 hertz . -

I would love to hear a pair of Harbeths sometime - everything I've read about them, and the kind of folks I know who own them, suggests to me that I'd like 'em. They're also - in a classic way - very purposefully attractive loudspeakers.
Personally, I (ahem) sort of feel that my daily drivers evoke as certain... shall we say... Harbethishness in their aesthetics ;-)
