I just fried one of my 1C's. Like literally, smoke. See pic...

You'll be quite happy with the new 10's and 11's. I have bought a few different MW's now and all of the new ones are top notch.

I have noticed that speakers never seem to sound as good after you let the brown smoke out.

That smoke could have been trapped in there since the good ole days. Did it have a funny smell?

Thats the burnt lacquer coating from the voice coil windings. Very unpleasant.

Have you had a chance to do a good visual of the Xos? Usually, dark heavy smoke and very stinky will come from the PCB and its components. If you have not done a good visual of the Xos along with measurements, I would suggest you do so. You may replace the drivers but if the Xo was affected too, some problems may eventually reoccur.

Sorry for your misfortune, but that pic is great. I think I'm going to blow it up & tape it next to the rig as a reminder for my wife. I don't know how many times I've told her amp on last/off first & she still insists on power stuff up willy nilly. Luckily all of my gear is newer SS stuff, but one of these days she's going to fry something.

Finished the upgrades to the other speaker last night. So in 48 hours I went from one of my speakers burning up to repaired 1C's along with rings, dynamat, armacell, and jb weld. I hate to say that I'm kind of glad this happened, because I'm out some money, but I will say this: If it hadn't happened, I definitely would not have these upgrades finished right now, that is for sure.

By the way, Larry, I had to take a hack saw to a few of the driver rings - even with the flat piece cut out, I still couldn't fit a few of them in against the wood panel that runs down the center of the cabinet. All good, though. All I need now is a hot pair of your CRS+ stands!!!

Your the second person I know that had to do that. My brace/s were centered I guess some pushed to the side a little closer to the hole..

I had to do the same thing.

Just a thought, How about making them 1/4 circle brackets like the tweeter brackets. I think they would work just as well and give people more options, You could use them on Top/Bottom or on the Sides depending on the bracing besides you could get more bracket's per sheet with less waste. Just my $0.02

No disrespect but why was your first reaction to a burning speaker to take a picture of it ???

    Good luck.

Trust me I thought about that in the very beginning but opt'ed not to do it as I like using the full ring, and there have only been 3 or 4 people that had to really modify anything.

What about making the driver rings with two breakpoints like on the PR ring? That way, if I need to get rid of the flat edge side, it just snaps away. Bit more difficult than the PR, because the two snap points won't be opposite each other, so can't just fold in half. But a little gentle persuasion would work with no need for the hack saw.

How did the Armacell work for you?I personally love teh stuff, because it is so compressible, and easier to work with than the mortite.

Yeah it was great. I've not worked with the Mortite, but I've read all the pros/cons, and armacell definitely seems like the hands down winner. I can tell you one thing, my cabinets are as air tight as can be. The pressure test with the PR has never looked better.

I definitely give the armacell a thumbs up. For the purpose, I don't see how you find a better product.

Yes Larry, I would keep them as is. They work well and as you said only a few have had to "overly" modify their speakers/rings. I believe the full ring would work better than a bracket for the drivers. However, I have obviously not tried a bracket like the tweeters, so I have no direct proof of my statement. However, logically I think a full ring would couple the driver to the speaker front than two brackets would. Sorry, I'm rambling..... Please keep it the same is my point. Thanks again Larry for the taking the time to offer to do the rings and tweeter brackets for us. I look forward to getting another set when you have time please.
