Technically -four- bad incidents...
But yes - I like my amp enough to continually go through the issues for the fourth time! Not to mention Klaus has always taken care of me.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
I can't believe that thing started on fire! wow. Klaus is a nice guy from when I've talked to him. I had a few questions regarding some amps and info as I didn't see what I wanted to know on his website. Helpful I would say.
Does anyone have photos of the insides of the Kismet amps? I've never seen them or the guts and was always interested in them. -
6Moons Review of Kismet with interior shots: http://sixmoons.com/audioreviews/odyssey2/1.html
And a few other shots on the net . . .
As much as I dislike Klaus's customer support sometimes, the interior of his amps makes me feel funny in the pants. -
Symphonic Line caps! *drool*- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

I am sorry, but I wouldn't stand for this. I completely understand things happen sometimes, but 3 times???? I'd ship it back and move on. There are lots of other amps out there that sound as good and better to have to deal with this.
Just my .02c

I agree. I think for the money, you can find other manufacturers like Belles for example that sound utterly amazing.

A couple of years ago I had a literal flame out of an output transistor in a Carver TFM-25. It actually blew a hole in the output transistor and of course took out a bunch of other stuff. I wasn't even pounding on it at the time. Pic attached.SDA-1C (full mods)

Like I said, these things happen, but after it was repaired did it happen 2 more times in a relatively short time period? I'll go out on a limb and assume it didn't.

Dump it and move on. Surely you can find something else that sounds as good to your ears and is in your price range.
Mike, what amps did you move on to since? Any others with similar qualities(and better reliability)?"He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche -
I will give it one more shot.
Thanks guys!- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
I have a Stratos Extreme. No trouble, but it's only 8 months old...design is where science and art break even.

No it didn't. Ran great for a year and then last winter I traded it for my Eico tube integrated. 3 times on the same unit would convince me.SDA-1C (full mods)

I'm rockin a pair of Quicksilver Mid Monos. They are kinda apples and oranges with the Odyssey gear, but I would never go back. -
Seriously guys... if these dont work - I will look around but I am willing to give it one more shot!- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

I hope you don't leave them plugged in when you're not home."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche
-
Ah, you can't do that with Odyssey gear. They take what seems like forever for the initial burn in and mine took three days to sound optimum every time I powered it down to the point that it was completely cooled. The Sound and the sound stage were all over the place until day three. Klaus even says to keep them on 24/7.
You brought up a good point, though. How much trust would you place in the cabinet containing any future failure, Trey?~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~ -
Yeah, considering Klaus recommends they stay plugged in and on at all times, the fire is a little disconcerting.

You know, we nicknamed my rig "Sparky" because it got hit by lightning a couple of years back. Maybe we should nickname his "Firestarter".

Yeah,thats what I'm thinking!
The manual says that it needs 3 days "to charge up" before it sounds its best. I've been leaving the damn thing on. I guess I better make sure my home insurance is paid up... lol
But it occurs to me that vr3m said it was the same amp each time. And, as i understand, it's the exact same amp both times, not two completely different amps. It seems to me that some component that didnt get changed, like the xformer as hypothesized by Klaus, would likely be the problem, and not something inherent to the design. But I also could've understood the situation wrong.design is where science and art break even. -
I wonder how the homeowner's insurance policy would be affected... knowingly having a fire hazzard in the home cannot look good to investigators. I would seriously ask Klaus if he would personally cover you for your loss if they go surface of the sun and do more damage than to just the amps. No way I would be plugging them in at my place. The Gear... as an aside, what do you think of the odyssey on the bass section of Emmy CS2's?

Well, look on the bright side. At least there's that 20-year warranty on your side. I mean, how many companies out there offer that? Odyssey and Bryston are the only only two I can think of off the top of my head.
I'll chime in as one who's satisfied with the gear; the Odyssey amps have so far driven my Maggies with aplomb. I understand that sometimes it takes Klaus a while to get around to doing things and the wait times for components can be several months. I also understand that it's essentially a family business, and because of the reputation they are very busy building things for people. I highly doubt they have shelves stocked full of amps and preamps; it's being built to order. And if that helps keep prices under control, then I say great for all of us. And....where else can you call at 2 in the morning and get someone on the phone?
Having said that, I hope he can fix that amp for you. I'd probably get frustrated and move on too (everything has a limit).Polk SDA SRS 2

Guys - please understand that I have had these amps close to 3-4 YEARS now.
The last year the LEFT amplifier has given me problems.
Simple as that. Other than that these amps are bullet proof and the right one still is.

I'd go for some sort of D Class for the bass section. D Class is super tight for bass and costs less on average than a good set of Odyssey amps. -
Ahhhhhhhhh - did my monthly ritual of boxing up the whole amps for their journey back to their home land...
Fed ex is my friend at this point - I know them by name! lol- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Can we start a drinking game?
1 shot for every monday that passes and Trey doesn't receive the amp back.
A 30 second keg stand when Klaus calls and says it will be finished by the end of the week.
1 shot for every time Trey calls with no answer.
1 shot for every time the message box is full.
1 shot for every time Klaus's dog dies, his kid is sick, or his parts supplier fails to deliver. -

Me too!!! Glad, someone else knows my pain. -
My favorite was back when I was trying to buy the amps new..
One week at the start of the month I called to check in - caps were in, waiting on transformers...
Next month -- I called... Transformers arrived but now out of caps...
That was the phone call in which I proceeded to buy the amps I have now from George Daniels used - then later upgraded to the half Kismet design and to where I am at now..- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.
