Hmm, funny thing is I was wondering whether I should first upgrade the tweeters or save up some cash and upgrade the crossovers down the road.

I'll put you first in line though if/when I upgrade the tweeters. Honestly, right now I need an amp and preamp lol I have nothing left other than my Sony ES player that Mark gave me, some MIT S3's, and Ben's silver speaker wire. The main components are non-existent.

You should be ale to find something cheap to get you by. I'd search craigslist for a vintage integrated or receiver.

    Yeah, was just doing that.

Found this which is much closer to me than the SDA's were (no affil) - http://monterey.craigslist.org/ele/2316694877.html

I sent the guy an email, but asking only for the amp. Don't have enough money for the whole thing, and I figured I could use the variable output on the Sony until I get a preamp later on.

Yeah, I mean he was the original owner. Says he paid $2k+ in '91. Doubt the speakers were a priority to him since he had stuff packed away left and right, on top of the fact that he was selling the house too. Asked if he had any other gear for sell, but he said he's not sure he'd part with it yet....mentioned having some Carver components.

Should've wiped down the drivers a bit before taking a picture but anyway, here you guys go. As you can see, there's no amp/preamp!

Placement isn't ideal, I know (I've had SDA's) but this is the best I can do for now. I guess I'll set aside modding my car and focus on audio again. Been away from it for too long!

I have a TFM35 not in use at the mo. If you want a loaner, PM or give me a call if you still have my number. Might have a couple of Ben's Silver ICs lying around to get you up and running.

    Let me know.

    Hey Ron,

    Yeah I've still got your number! Appreciate that very much btw. I'm just really anxious (for reasons good/bad) to try these speakers out because;
    1. Seller did not specify what driver was out (simply stated left side).
    2. I'm afraid another driver, or two or three may have shifted during transit.

Whatever drivers they are, I plan on replacing them asap. Shortly after, I hope to find an amp suitable for low-moderate listening volumes.

Haven't looked at the Compendium in awhile, so I'm not sure of the load out in the 3.1s, but I have a couple of spare 6511s.

Is shadowofnight still around? He's closer to you and probably has spares running out of his ears.

I've seen him post, in fact not long ago he told me about some...monitors I believe it was that were nearby.

From what I read, the load is @6ohms.

After I bring your amp on over, I'll give the TL's a test to find out what drivers are bad and check back with you and shadow. If it's a single driver that's out, that'll save me some $$$ and I might just invest in a crossover upgrade.

How many here prefer 198's over SL3K's? I know it's all personal preference but I'm wondering if I should bite at all when the time comes.

    I am always lurking :)

I gave away most of my spare speakers and radiators to forum members, yours takes four 6503's and one 6511 per cabinet...6503's are really common and Ron has 6511's so it should be easy if you do in fact have bad drivers.

It's better to remove each driver to check for shifted/scratchy VC/blown drivers, looks like you transported them correctly on their backs in your car...so you probably didnt cause any new issues.

If you need any help testing your drivers , I have everything here to do it...I even have a pair of SDA 2b's that only use one 6503 and one 6511 ...in case you have a measured marginal driver. It would be a lot easier to hear issues in a single driver in an SDA that only uses one active 6503 instead of 4. :)

I also have the Compendium here as well, just let me know if you want to borrow it.

I pushed in each driver and all of them felt the same, no scratchiness/resistance/rubbing of a voice coil or anything.

Can't say the same for the tweeter obviously but we'll see soon enough.

It's good to hear that the 6503's are very common, and that there are spares available somewhat locally

I'll be able to test them out myself so no worries there though I appreciate the help.

Hoping to hear back about that Carver amp on craigslist, if not hopefully something else comes up. Been away from SDA's for far too long now.

I can't remember exactly how my 1C's sounded but I do remember that SDA effect. Can't wait to hear it again in an even larger form. Will be different since the 1C's had 2 tweeters as opposed to 1 on the 3.1's, as well as 2 dimensional drivers.

You're getting back into the SDA game just as I got out. qwertycus picked up my last pair on Saturday. It was a bit sad, but there are some brighter things on the horizon. I'm sure I'll come back to them at some point in the future. Enjoy those speakers! that's one helluva deal on one helluva speaker ;)

It was a pleasure meeting you Ron! Your 1C's made me miss the pair I had, but I'm glad I've got SDA's again.

Can't wait to get your gear hooked up here, just need to move things around a bit and create some jumpers since the SDA's didn't have any installed. Will post my thoughts later.

Tonight I'll have to pull out some drivers to locate the 'bad' one. It's going to be one of the 6503's that's for sure...just need to find out which one exactly.

Hoping the distortion I heard through the passive radiator was indeed because of a blown mid-bass driver. Would hate to look for a passive radiator for these things!
