Julian Lennon's Valotte is a pretty good one as well. Not as good as the others mentioned, but I do remember how spooked I was to hear just how much he sounded like his father. I still spin this one up from time to time.

Well I wasnt born during any of those debuts with the exception of Pearl Jam, not a fan though. Neither am I a fan of Led Zepplin, classically trained or not the guitarist is trash live, always out of tune, and dont play a guitar with a bow, use a pick. But I will give them their due respect. I like guitar virtuoso's, with the likes of Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, and of course Zakk Wylde. To end it quickly I hate debuts, because it takes me time to start enjoying a band. My favorite album, or cd for my age, would be Shadows Falls: War Within. Oh yeah what about Iron Butterfly, Inagodadavida or what ever.

Very much worth getting if you can snag it, Erik. Candy-O as well, but you'll pay premium for a copy of Candy on Nautilus.

I'll definitely be buying this one on vinyl also when it becomes available.

A record that I like a lot (and not that I'd admit that just anywhere!) but it wasn't her debut per se.

If you look at a lot of these, some or all of the artists in question had been recording previously. This one is a true debut AND also was one of the most ground-breaking albums of its time.

And that song is memorable for being really long and kind of original, but it's not very good, and the rest of their stuff that I've ever heard is HORRIBLE. Not a good band.

    This thread is awesome.

Some other honorable mentions that are not necessarily my favorites but are GREAT albums :

    - Buffalo Springfield - Buffalo Springfield
    - The Who - My Generation
    - Queen - Queen 1
    - Black Crowes - Shake Your Money Maker
    - Ben Folds Five - Ben Folds Five

Everyone should own this. Great debut album, still one I spin regularly. Pretty heavy stuff from a band that eventually were catagorized as "power pop". Not a whole lot of "Beatles" sound on this album, just heavy, straight forward, and a tad psychedelic tinged rock.

P.s. Just because they are from my home town and I see Rick around town quite a bit, doesn't mean I was influenced at all.

Once largely written off by critics as arena-rock dinosaurs, Rockford, Illinois's favorite musical sons have become darlings of an influential cadre of alternative and modern-rock superstars and the subjects of an overdue catalog upgrade--and for a slew of good reasons. The first of those would be Cheap Trick, the blistering 1977 debut that confounded reviewers nearly as well as it captured the band's edgy song sensibility and musical chops honed by their 200-plus-gig-a-year work ethic. Producer Jack Douglas wisely opted for a deceptively raw tack that captured Cheap Trick's manic live essence better than any other album--save, of course, Live at Budokan. The band's later bubble-gum rep is viciously and hilariously undercut here by songs about youth-culture cynicism ("Elo Kiddies"), pedophilia ("Daddy Should Have Stayed in High School"), mass murder ("The Ballad of TV Violence"), and gigolos ("He's a ****"), not to mention a tasty cover of Terry Reid's "Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace." Guitarist Rick Nielsen's loud, trashy fretwork presaged "grunge" by a good 15 years, and Robin Zander's vocals show why he's since been tagged the Man of a Thousand Voices. And the rhythm section of drummer Bun E. Carlos and Tom Petersson was (and is) one of rock's most underrated. This Sony Legacy "Expanded Edition" restores the album's original running order (the previous version flipped the vinyl's A and B sides) and features new photos, liner notes, and five bonus cuts. One of rock's greatest albums, unsung or otherwise. --Jerry McCulley

Despite John Rutsy on drums this is a fantastic debut album. Sure it was more Zeppelinesque than anything that followed but look at when it was released, who could blame them for trying to emulate the best band of all time.

I have a bootleg recorded in late 1974 of Rush at the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, OH. The local radio station did a live broadcast. They played this album mostly and the raw energy and power just blows me away (Neil Peart) had just joined the band so he was on the drums.

Was her later stuff more polished? yes. Was her later stuff a bit more mature? yes. But this stands as an excellent debut album. It's a very raw recording at times, it can seem a bit unfinished and takes on more of a "sketch book" of lyrics and melodies, but it's one thoroughly enjoyable piece of work and great debut.

I got the Essential Live Songbook for X-mas...........it's excellent. I have about 15 Insant Live discs of hers and they are even better since there is little to no mixing, compression, editing, dubs, etc. Makes the DVD sond tamed down in comparison.

Not a fan but a lot of other interesting stuff above. One thing that is quite obvious about a large chunk of the discourse above, as well, is how 'generational' many of the picks are?

I guess the music you come of age to is an inescapable legacy.

Just DVD, and while it's not bad at all the Instant Live cd's I have are special simply because they seem to be the raw, unadulterated audio. Blu-Ray might be on the horizon for me once I get a dedicated HT room.
