When ever I go to Marietta Georgia, I go to Williamson Bros BBQ. Great BBQ and sauce. You can even order it online:

I'm gonna have to vouch for that. I'm not even a big BBQ sauce fan, but I could drink that stuff straight out of the bottle. A lot of different flavors going on in the sauce - with each taste being slightly different from the previous. I guess that's what they mean by "complex". Good stuff.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Sweet Baby Ray's for mass marketed BBQ sauce. Having read through the thread that sounds like its the clear winner.

There's some local folks who make great sauce, too.

Believe it or not, I read something not so long ago and Kraft BBQ sauce got a thumbs up as being one of the best tasting store bought brands.

You are correct, it was in Consumer Reports this last year sometime.

Sweet baby rays mixed with some of tabasco's smoked chipotle for the house. I've never been to a BBQ place and not liked their sauce. Just love me some BBQ and trying different sauces. Now I'm gonna have to have a brisket sandwich for lunch. YES!

Here in South Carolina we often use a mustard based sauce. It is quite a different flavor and Maurice's is one of the best.

I take any typical plain BBQ sauce (Kraft, Hienz, etc), add mustard, a tiny bit of brown sugar, 2 drops of Worchestershire, and add beer so it's thinned, but not too much.

'Bone Suckin BBQ Sauce' is the best I've had, and I've tried a lot of the store bought stuff. Available at Fresh Market.

Dinosaur's BBQ sauce is good, as is Big Bad Wolf's ****. The stuff Gmiller was kind enough to give us on the way down to Troy's last year was great as well.

Maybe I just love BBQ. Mmmmm, BBQ.......

A while back, I ran out of the Old Mule BBQ sauce and had to resort to other means. I went to the store and bought various BBQ sauces to try out individually and I thought I'd experiment a bit. Here's what I bought and here's my immediate reaction to each sauce individually.....

16oz. bottle of HOT Bone Suckin' Sauce [too hot/intense to enjoy the flavor of the sauce itself]
18.5oz. bottle of Jodeco's Southern Twang [too much tomato paste and flavor...lame spices, blah]
19oz. FunniBonz HOT BBQ Sauce [best of the four but not quite Old Mule]
and some cheap [no name, probably generic or store brand] 16oz. bottle of Hickory smoked BBQ sauce [not good, lame]

Now, I must admit that some of these sauces were not cheap. Some of them were upwards of 6 dollars a pop. Not really what I consider a deal but one would figure that "in theory" that if they cost that much, they must be good....yeah, right...

Anyhoo, what I did since none of them rocked my boat was combine all of them into one pan and added these ingredients listed below...

1/2" of Apple Cider Vinegar in the bottom of a large sauce pan and continued to reduce everything on a little lower than medium heat for about 3 and 1/2 hours. Anything else I added was purely in the spice category and I'm drawing a blank there because I always tweak as I go with slow cooked meals. I can guarantee you there was a pinch or 10 of onion powder and garlic salt in the mix but anything else I may have added is a blur.

I wouldn't worry too much about the ingredients that are a blur because most of those were purely to taste and there wasn't much of anything that isn't already mentioned. Turned out pretty good and was definitely better that any of the individual bottles but with the cost and labor associated, it definitely wasn't worth it.

While I'm not the authority when it comes to BBQ sauce, mantis....do yourself a favor and order some Old Mule. I have a feeling your opinion will change. The last time I had Sweet Baby Ray's, I cooked a meal with it and threw the rest of the bottle away.

One of the secrets they use is that they actually take the loss in profits and volume and make the time to reduce the sauce. You can taste it too.

I like the Stubb's ones too. They have some good rubs as well. The Chilli-Lime rub on grilled chicken is awesome!

Stubbs beef marinade is great on tips! Gives it a nice little kick.

For mass produced, can't really beat SBR's. I just made some pulled pork in a crock pot (didn't want to fire up the smoker in the snow!) and threw some SBR's original and some Hickory and Brown Sugar on it. Good stuff.

I used a good one a month or two ago on ribs that had the onions in the sauce - can't remember the name of it, but the sight of them on the ribs was enough to make your mouth water. I thought it was Desert Pepper, but I can't find it on the web. Might have to check when I get home.

Gates BBQ sauce is great too.

Sure do, I make a modified variation of a Coca-Cola BBQ sauce I found on FoodNetworks website. I made some changes to suit my own tastes, but it seems to work every time. IMO having a good dry rub is key to good BBQ too.

I also throw on some Sweet Baby Rays whenever I make ribs, it just seems to caramelize better than the sauce I make- maybe I need more brown sugar?
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

When you are in Cincinnati do yourself a favor and check out the Montgomery Inn. Great bbq and great sauce. Most of the grocery stores in Ohio carry it. Thick and smoky with a nice sweet follow up taste. Complex and indulgent.

This is the sauce I use for my ribs. Almost everyone that eats my ribs say they're the best they've ever had. Sure, the cook has some skill, but the sauce does most of the work!

EDIT: I'm going to order some of the Old Mule to see how it goes. I'm pumped!
