hey guys, i just bought a sunfire tgp-401 processor and hook it up with a Sony blu-ray dvd player? i don't know why i'm not getting any sounds. I talk to Sunfire technical support and he told me that the HDMI is for the pictures only but not for sounds. That's kind of strange because i always thought hdmi is for both. Am i missing something with this processor? Can someone verify this?

some of the older equipment only used HDMI for video as in HDMI 1.0.
If you called Sunfire and that is what they said well then that is what they did.

The Sunfire supports video only over HDMI, so you will need to run an optical out for the audio portion, or the analog outputs. I find the Sunfire sounds better than my old Yamaha reciever did, and it had full support of HDMI.

Thanks for the inputs, i wish i knew about it before i spend $1500 for it. I can't believe that a processor worth $3000 won't fully support HDMI. I guess i just have to find a better blu-ray with 7.1 analog.

I knew the TGP V was that way but thought they upgraded to HDMI 1.3 in the 401. Guess I assumed incorrectly.

You still have a great unit even though it does not do exactly as you thought. They are well known for sounding great in 2 channel and in HT modes.

The optical out should provide all the connectivity you need. I too was suprised that the Sunfire did not fully support HDMI, but the overall performance has more than made up for that shortcoming. If I can help at all, just let me know. I have the TGP mkV which is exactly the same thing as yours, minus the updated cosmetics.

Good luck, most have done away with the analog outputs on BDP's. You may have to go used if you don't want to break the bank. Why don't you just re-sell the Sunfire and buy the right processor you need ? Also keep in mind when useing the analog outputs on a BDP, which are 5.1 btw, you need all the speakers. In other words, if you don't have a center channel, you lose that info,or if you don't have a sub, you'll lose that info. Only in the digital domain does AVR's or Processors re-route signals for speakers you may not have. Ooops, just saw in your sig you have 7.1, the only problem I see going analog, is that most on BDP are 5.1, so your sides won't get sound. But if it was all by way of HDMI, the processor will take care of that, see what I'm sayin' ?

Yeah I know u mean. I have an onkyo 805 that I use prior to updating to the sunfire. I thought it would be a big jump but just a little unexpected with the hdmi. But it's ok though, I'm going buy a blu-ray 3d with 7.1 analog output, hopefully it will turn out the way it should perform.

Just get an optical out from your current BluRay and connect it to the optical input on the Sunfire. I even have a couple I will send you if you like.

Oh thanks. I got one optical cable. I'll test it out later

Why does he need that John, if he's going analog ? The BDP, when useing the analog outputs does all the decoding.
I don't know of any Blu-ray discs as of yet that are 7.1.

the optical out handles the audio while the HDMI takes care of the video. This eliminated the need to buy or change anything else in his setup. Mine is set up this way and the performance is fantastic in either 5.1 or 7.1.

There are a handful of 7.1 discs out there, but literally I can count them all on one hand.

Yes but he won't get the new audio codecs this way. If he's useing analog,he will, thus negateing the need for an optical cable.

Bingo. Analog connections are the way to go.

The new Oppo BDP-93 has analog connections for 7.1 & is $499. If you can pick up the older BDP-83 used they have the same connections.
