Back in the hospital

So after being out a little under a week, I got sick today and couldn't stop getting sick. When I starting crying like a babe due to the pain I decided I should prob go to the ER. Wife took me in and after another CT Scan it looks like I have a couple loops and partial blockage interfering w/ my digestion.
So long story short I got admitted but am getting transferred to another hospital (Clarion in downtown Indy, which is where I was before). They are talking like I am going to potentially have surgery tomorrow to remove some of my intestines.
This news has the wife (and myself) a little freaked out to say the least. I have already met my out of pocket max due to my first adventure so cost isnt on our mind so much as recovery time and how much work I might be missing.
Any thoughts and prayers from you guys would be much appreciated. I know God has a plan but there are times like now where you just wish you could understand it better.

Depends....met my out of pocket max w/ the first visit so all this is technically free...after the first of the year not so much...
So while it sucks to be back in so soon, based on how expensive this could be, its good to get it over with before our deductible resets....
Told the wife we need to start playing the lotto for sure since if its a one in a mill chance I seem to be that 1....hopefully that also is true for the lottery

As someone with Crohns this has always been something I figured I would deal with at some point. If its what they need to do to make me feel better then the wife and I have no problems. She is just scared that once they start cutting out they will continue and I will eventually die early and leave her alone (she tends to get a little freaked out easily)Thinking of you, get well soon! At least you are in the right place to get some help and not at home trying to be Mr Man
Trust me, I wanted to be Mr. Man , but when your in a ball crying and cant stop because you physically want to rip out guts, its time to stop it with the pride and get help . My wife starts her new job today and the last thing I wanted her to have to think about was me here while she has to work. I know she wants to be here, but her head needs to be at her new job.Best of luck for you. Stay strong.
Thanks! Thats all you can do at this point. Giving in to despair wont help anyone, especially the wife."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
Talked to one of the doctors and she was going to talk to her GI group and come in and present me with my "options". Wish they would all just come in at once rather than have one come in, ask questions and go report to the rest and then have them come in. But the process is the process....."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." So its still iffy as to what we are going to do. I feel much better than I did last night, but still am not performing some functions they want to see. So they are letting me drink some fluids and maybe eat some later today and are hoping those functions happen in the meantime. So I am going to be here at least one more night for sure. The longer I am here the more they are backing off the surgery option based on how I look and am responding.
They are wanting to give my new meds (Humira) 3-4 months to be in my system before they would start thinking about surgery which would put that potentially at the beginning months of next year. The thought is that there is that the areas that have active Crohns in may be too far gone to save and thats why I feel good, but end up in the ER. But they want to see if it could be saved by giving the new med time (also while upping my doses of Prednisone) Also apparently most patients start to have these types of surgery after 10 years of active disease so for once it looks like I beat the odds there....
The problem is that I have had these types of episodes before but just haven't been to the ER for it since the ER isn't exactly cheap. That and I cant continue to call off work for them since that eventually will cause issues for me.
So I am pushing them to tell me if they think those areas are gonna come out regardless since I would prefer it to be sooner rather than later since January 1 my insurance resets. So I might be talking to a surgeon later today just to get more information about recovery time, possible complications, ect."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
Hey, I hope the cautious approach works and you are able to get well without surgery, at least for now.
Not sure if it does you any good, but if you need another opinion I have a brother who is a GI in Fort Wayne. -

How about getting out of the hospital first. Prayers for you sir.
I have Crohn's and have been on Humira for 2 years now. The stuff is amazing and kept me from having surgery to the point that I don't need it at all right now or for the foreseeable future.
If you have never been on Remicade I would talk about that first. It seems to heal things better than Humira or Cimzia.
Let me know if you have any questions as I have been through the mill with Crohn's.
Good luck and Get Well Soon.. -
Good Luck!
I've read a little about Crohn's but have NO idea whether the type of surgery you're talking about is really effective or not. I'd go with trying to recover naturally with the drugs first and also ask your physicians, if you haven't, what the recovery statistics are for this procedure? As I understand it, there is no cure for this phenomenon?
Hope you can have a family T-Giving!

Appreciate it, had it since age 13 so going on 14 years with it so I have a decent understanding of it. The Humira is working great the overall concern is that the two areas I have are just too far gone to heal up regardless which is why I feel great but they are still inflamed. I went from purenithol to Humira and am loving it as I can eat food I couldnt before and not have issues.
For me going to Remicade might still end up in the same outcome and realistically be much more financially devastating to us if this happened next year. If they think their is a chance they will have to take it out regardless best to do it now IMO.Good Luck!

It is no curable, but it is something you can live with and still led a very healthy life. You live with it, not die from it. So while it can make life complicated you do still keep on living. Regarding them taking a piece or two out that procedure is decently effective. The overall reason for concern is that even on Humira, Steroids and other meds the area of constriction has actually gotten worse. It also butts up to an area of active Crohns so they would take that part out as well.
The surgery resident we spoke to was unsure if they also would remove the other 10cm piece of active disease or not. It all depended on a couple pieces of info she didnt have at the time.
Either way I am going to talk to the surgeon tonight and we will find out the info we really need such as how invasive it is, recovery time, work restrictions, likelihood of complications, ect.
I did get to see my CT's from the last time I was in and this one and the constricted area is literally down to under 5mm so its something that really does need to come out is what they are starting to think.
Continued prayers are greatly appreciated!"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
I wasn't sure if you had been on anything like Humira or if you were just starting. I think I have to agree that Surgery may be your best bet. Note recovery is long. On the average 8-12 weeks. They will tell you 6-8 but I have not seen anyone have that rate of recovery unless the surgery was done laproscopically.
I would see if they can do the surgery laproscopically. It cuts the heal time almost in half and the chances of hernias in area of the surgery are minimal. I wish this was an option when I had my surgery back in 2000. I look like I was gutted by a fishermen.
