My 2 cents for what's it's worth. Younger generations are a light lifestyle livers. No heavy big bagage to drag through life and if something breaks, just buy a new one. We (over 50 )didn't have those thoughts AT All. We were a buy it once and make it last type of mindset, hense all the DIY books, videos and tools.I agree with the generational mindset that was mentioned about follow your dreams and live your dreams that has been taught for 20 yrs. now.

What in the world is going to happen when all of us DIYers die off... The few tradespeople will be able to charge what plumbers have been able to do for centuries. Have you guys and gals seen how ambitious plumbers live? Ambitious Electritions and HVAC and also Ambitious mechanics also live very comfortable and have the finer luxuries of life and lifestyles too.

The DIYers are getting rarer and rarer BUT that has to change along with the economies free flowing cash bases diminishing. People WILL have to learn to do things themselves since that extra cash to pay someone else won't be there aplenty anymore. Time Life should start reprinting those great series of books again. I already have my set and have certain sections marked for future reference like wiring those three way light switch circuits. I remember when I'd walk into a Sears store and see alot of guys looking at Craftsman tools in every ailse. Now I hardly see ONE. Maybe guys buy tools online now, I don't know.
Well I know some guys who do stuff still, like myself and even my daughter we'll keep doing it to save money and because like another said earlier, WE LIKE DOING IT.
P.S. I am also one who just LOVES TO PAINT: there's not many like me in that regard I know!:D

I think Zero nailed it. My dad falls into the MacGyver group. I'm not as hardcore as he is but I still do plenty of guy stuff, change my own brake pads and oil. Installed a hitch this week on my Mazda, it sucked, had to fishwire bolts through the frame rails. Racing the Stang this weekend! However, I don't rebuild engines in the dining room like dad did. :)

:eek::eek::eek:You love to eh! Back in the day I liked to do contrast painting in rooms . . . now, I'm puting off painting a friggin molding around one single door. I've learned to hate painting. Well, more like I hate cleaning up just like when I cook.

I hate to clean up after alot of cooking too!
I don't mind paint clean up at all. I have to paint the main part of my house on the exterior as soon as it gets a little cooler. I had that shoulder thing for a yr. and a half and have fallen behind on "Harry the homeowner" things that always need to be done IF your one who cares about your home and surroundings. Maybe people only live in one place for a short period and move, letting another worry about needed home repairs and maintenences.;)

I just don't get it when people can live in a house (that they own) for 20/30 yrs. or something like that and let the exterior go to crap.

I loved reading about the gutter hanging and shutter hanging in this thread. I've done it to mine with success though but those darn gutter spikes keep working themselves out every year or two.:(

I re-roofed my house a few times( in 20 yrs.)until last yr.. My groin has been repaired 4 times now and my shoulder was really getting frozen and painfull. We had a great tax refund the year before so some went (as a down payment, and charged the rest)to some professional co.(I knew them through where I worked and knew they did 1st class work) and they had 10 guys show up and did it in one day. Tear off and re-roof; amazing co-ordination with that co.. The only thing I had to do was pick up a palm full of wood chips that the clean-up crew missed. I hated to pay it but it really was worth it at this stage of my life. It should be the last roof I'll need as long as I live or untill my 80's. Then I'll start to decide if I need to do it myself or let it go or pay..
I bet it won't be the first choice then either.:D

Replace them with gutter screws, problem solved.

I think most "guy stuff " is fun so I do it. The problem is, so does my wife, so we fight over who gets to do some of the projects. Roofing is an exception to me. I've had mine replaced twice and both times I left in the morning and came back to a new roof and no mess. Well worth the money.

I will do it or try it 9 times out of 10.
That 10th time is typically a height or plumbing issue that would take too long or too many trips to the store.
But, I still usually try everything first, then call for help after if needed.
As I get older, I am getting better at what I choose to do or not to do.
But still do most everything myself.

Or installing a motion-activated light on the side of my house? Those types of things??

I spent the weekend racing cars. Spent today on my roof fixing a leak. Now I'm watching the allstar game and I'm about to get a Schlitz out of the freezer.

but I never do guy stuff...

Oh yeah, I got 23.22 seconds at Bristol, but the first attempt at Charlotte, and a friend of mine had 2 little rolled up pieces of tape and handed them to me as I exited the track, he said " here, you forgot these ".
I felt much better after Bristol.

Funny thing, I forgot to mention this. My wife comes from a long line of tile setters and plumbers. Her grandfather & one brother- plumbers, her father & other brother - tiles setter. So she does guys things too!

Zero's statement reminds me of an episode of "Two and a Half Men" where Alan falls off the ladder trying to fix the satellite dish. Anytime anyone new sees him all bandaged up they ask "Why didn't you call the guy?".

As I cruise thru my late forties, I've come to see my limits as well as the value of my time. I've done some of the slow updating of my home myself, assisted my skilled cousin with other parts, and hired out the very difficult work (replumbing, new furnace, advanced electrical) just because I knew my limits.

Just yesterday I hand sanded 450 feet of decking with the help of an electric palm sander and six Advil. There is a special feeling looking over a project done yourself.
