I cut the grass and wash the car ('cept in the wintertime).
Two weeks ago, while Mrs. H was in Alaska, I repaired our brick front steps.

I build and repair vacuum tube hifi gear, that's pretty manly, no?

Oh, I also grow as much of my own food as possible during the week-long Northern New England growing season.

Things I do or have done myself:
    Mow the lawn/Maintain landscaping
    Maintain the swimming pool
    Replaced 3 faucets
Unseated and reinstalled a toilet (3 times)
Ran wire for my dedicated HT outlet
    Installed electrical outlets
    Installed new light fixtures/ceiling fans
Stained new cedar fence (I won't be guilty of doing this again)
Minor ceramic tile job in kitchen
Added shelving to a few closets in our house
Painted pretty much the entire interior of the house
    Fixed a few leaking faucets
Replaced the head on broken sprinklers
    New alternator on car
    New battery in car

Things I pay or have paid to have done because I don't feel competent:
    Patio cover
New board on board cedar fence
    New garage door opener
    New A/C unit
    Ceramic tile flooring
    New carpet
    Wood flooring
    Scraping popcorn ceiling/re-texturing
Remodel of master bathroom and kitchen
    New pool motor
Replace pool light (Electricity AND water...NO THANKS!!)
    Brake work on car
Most automotive issues beyond basic maintenance

Things I pay to have done because I don't want to mess with it:
    Oil change
    Washing my car

I'm sure I'm missing some things on each list, but you get the idea. I'm sure there are varying opinions on what I've done and what I'm not able to do. All depends on your perspective.

Cool thread and I get the OP because quite honestly I've been in awe of work a friend has done and I've had friends who were impressed with things I've done.

I got to thinking ..... the only way to prove one's manliness would be with a good old-fashioned short-arm inspection.

But .... then.... maybe that's just what Jstas is hoping for ?;):)

(not that that's a bad thing)

Okay, this thread is officially on a downhill slope, and not the "Bunny Slope" but the "Satan's Maze Slope".

I NEVER said it was about being a man!

I SAID that when others talk to me about my projects that I am working on, they are amazed at what I am willing to do and that I have been successful at it.

I asked if guys do "guy stuff" anymore. How you morons turned it in to "manliness" is beyond me.

"Guy stuff" to me has always been things like home repair, automotive repair/maintenance, yard work and so on. I am baffled that so few people actually do this stuff anymore and I don't know why. I asked for insight but instead I got a bunch of BS.

You people twisted my words in to something that was not indicative of any intention I had.

Why don't you people just let it drop? Or do I have to have a mod lock it?

Some how all the meaningful or half way decent threads always get bashed and ruined while the sensless WTF?! thread seems to prosper and never die....
    wierd...

Anyway, I like to do my own work when I can. I feel that as long as I can buy a book on it or read about it and that it won't kill me or put anyone else in danger I might as well do it myself.
I not like my dad...but I'm close. That man does everything himself.
He rebuilt his own motor from parts at a junk yard that I'm sure even matched...I dunno, it runs better than it did before so....I have no clue what he did. He's a crazy man he's helping me build my deck as I write this. He took what I had built myself and he said that it would look better with an extension...I dunno, he's making it look damn nice though.

It's not pretty when I do home improvement :-(

That said, I have a pet peeve about these modern high-throughput lawncare contractors. Mind you, I don't begrudge them their livelihood (not at all!)... but these newfangled fast lawnmower things are so big, all these guys bring big trucks and trailers to their jobsites... and park the muvvas out in the middle of the road while they work. On the charming, curvy, short-sight-lined and treacherously narrow New England backroads, these are just an accident waiting to happen. Bugs the stuffing out of me...

Again, I actually like cutting grass, and will do so myself as long as I am able.

We have a guy 3 houses down pays someone big money to do his lawn.
I did it one summmer and would love to do it again. He has 3 acres of land and pays the person $200 per mow and pays for any gas used in the process, he also pays you $50 extra if you weedwack.
Crazy rich man who is absolutely lazy.
I made about 1600 one summer from him. Wish I could do again....

I take a bit of pride from a good DIY or repair project. The list is long, last night I was on the roof tracking down a leak, HVAC unit had a stopped up drain. That would have been $200-$300, with a little sweat and just one busted knuckle it is fixxed.

I had to convince the maker of my kitchen stove to send me the parts to repair it myself. After 12 years of pretty hard use I've replaced oven ignitors, burner piezo ignitors, oven gas burner, oven floor. It is a big stainless steel unit with 15,000 BTU burners and a 1500 degree gas broiler, a bit of a hot rod that needs a little TLC from time to time.

My mother in law paid a guy to tell her she needed about $400 in parts to fix a $1000 front load washer, I poked around and replaced a $60 drain pump and it's still alive and kicking.

I use my resources, between stuff I learned from my Dad, the library, and the interTubes, there is little I don't at least thinking what is the worst that could happen, than decide if it's worth it or not to roll up my sleeves.

With the car, I've driven Hondas for the last 15 years or so. All I have had to do was change out a couple of tires, engine air filters, ac air filters and that is about it. The big stuff I leave to my car guy.

I often volunteer with either Habbitat for Humanity or a local outfit that builds wheelchair ramps for people in need. I feel good about helping others sure but man I couldn't pay for the hands on lessons I have picked up while 'helping out'.

All that being said none of it is a measure of the man I am. Sounds like everyone one needs to 'lighten up francis'.

    Peace!

Hmm....apparently, my "baby" sister is more "guy" than I am. After all, she....

    - retiled an entire bathroom using ceramic tiles (after I gave her a tile saw for her B-day :D )
    - installed hard wood flooring
    - own a ton of powered tools
    - own lawnmower and does her own yard work (for the most part)
    - worked on the pump for her well in the backyard

She's currently installing wood shutters in her home....on her own. She's also armed, due to the nature of her job, and probably can take on anyone of you in a fistfight.

Pretty good for a 5'3", 110 lbs lady.

    Uhhh...no.

I said that some douchnozzle kid standing on the side of the road waiting for the old guy who works for NJDOT to come and do everything for him is worthy of his "man card" being revoked. If the kid pays for AAA and chooses to wait, that's on him. But if he chooses to do nothing and wait for an NJDOT truck to show up by chance then yeah, unless he has a medical condition that prevents him from being able to get himself out of a jam, he's not even an adult let alone a man. That's my personal opinion of that one kid that the NJDOT guy told me about. It's not even relevant to the rest of the thread.

Two different ideas there. Don't take my words out of context and throw them back at me.

Whether it was 2 different ideas or not, YOU brought it up in the thread that you say had nothing to do with the topic you asked about & linked it to manliness and things started going south from there.

For all we know maybe he DID have a medical condition, but most likely he was just lazy. But you made the assumption & labeled him not being a man.

As soon as you guys STOP relating everything to manhood the sooner these kinds of misunderstandings will come to an end, since this always seems to happen in these kinds of threads.

You are mistaken. I was not the one who made the assessment. The man employed by NJDOT did. I can only go on what information was presented to me. The man made it seem that this kid was entirely capable of pulling the spare out of the trunk along with the lug wrench and jack and could not be bothered to do any of the above let alone actually attempt to change the tire. Preferring instead to occupy his time with whatever gadget he had and left it to the NJDOT employee to the task.

While the NJDOT employee is paid to handle such situations, it is the child's attitude that is the source of disgust. A man...gentleman rather, would not leave a man twice his age to remove his spare tire from his trunk without explanation that he could not do so himself for whatever reason. A gentleman, if capable would perform the repair himself and if help was offered to speed him along his way, accept it graciously. The child, instead, preferred to stay engrossed in his own little world expecting the man from NJDOT to do it for him. That shows a severe lack of consideration for his fellow person and honestly, it is a trait that is lacking in most mature adults.

What is an adult boy? A man. Yes I stated his man card should be revoked but the capability to change a tire does not a man make. The manner in which a man handles adversity does. A flat tire is adversity and the child handled it poorly while a man stepped in and did it for him so he would not perish on the side of the road. THAT is the difference between a man and a child. A man deals with it. If he has to find help, he does. A child stands idly by, helplessly, until someone does it for them.

Stop lecturing me about "manhood". I am not the offending party. I asked a question. I just wanted to know why less and less people seem to be doing for themselves anymore. I didn't ask "Why are guys penises so small?" or "Why don't men stand up and be real men?". I asked "Do guys do "guy stuff" anymore?" If I knew women that did the stuff I would have included them too but I don't know any so it wasn't in my frame of mind.

I'm getting dragged through the mud over what other chose to interpret from simple English and I really don't appreciate it.

Sorry. I always associated DIY with being CHEAP. And That's me in spades.
If I had the money, do you think I would be crawling around under the hood
of the truck in 100+ degree weather? No, I'd buy a new one. I always look
at the job, and if it's too complex, or a PITA(roofing and car exhaust) then
I don't do it. But most of the time I'd rather have the money and DIY.
Nothing manly about it. Cheap and stubborn rules the day.
Do you really think the guy across the street with the new car looks over and
says, wow, look at that guy. There's a man's man. Not likely. I do it because
it's the only way I can afford this audio hobby.

I am with Cathy on this one. This thread just looks bad.

I do everything myself, including rebuilding small motors, electrical around the house, plumbing, carpentry(plus building speakers, and other woodworking projects).

I also clean my own house, cook my own food, and clean my own clothes. Does that also make a gal's gal?

I think I should start a new thread called: "Do chicks do 'chick stuff' anymore?" You know, like cook, clean, massage my shoulders. I am more woman than you!!! ROAR!!!

I'm defintely out of line; just had to have my kicks.

edit: maybe there is no trend. Maybe we just need to stop hanging around girly men.

I won't pretend to have an answer to the OP's question. I do however, have a hypothesis. Simply put, I believe that part of it is a generational thing. Now before some of you teens and twenty-somethings click on the 'reply' tab to beat your chest and to riff off your long list of handy-man skills, let me make it clear that I am referring to a broad group of young people who, like me, grew up in middle-American suburbia. Getting right to it:

Growing up, it was hard to find a dad who didn't embody MacGyver-like attributes. My friends and I constantly marveled at our fathers ability to build or fix damn near anything. Vehicles. Lawn and gardening. Construction. Plumbing. Electronics. You name it, our dads could do it. If they couldn't do it, it was only because A) they didn't have the time to get something done, or B) the project would require the equivelant man power of twenty illegal's ( sorry, I couldn't resist ). The bottom line is that most of us had dads that were extremely handy. We could rely on them to fix anything, and more times than not -they did. The question is, how did so many guys from my generation grow up without inheriting the same skill sets of our fathers?

I think a lot of it has to do with complacency. If we had a problem, daddy was usually there to take care of it for us. Even if he wasn't there, we knew that a solution to the problem was just a phone call away. Why bother getting our hands dirty when you could just hire someone else to do the manual labor for you? This leads me to the next bit...

I believe that my generation has, to one degree or another, waged war against manual labor. Growing up, most adults (parents and teachers alike) hammered home the notion of pursuing our dreams. "You can do anything if you just put your mind to it". "Live your dreams and be happy". Let's face it, who dreams of growing up building decks, doing pipe fitting, etc etc.. ? We didn't, and we sure as hell didn't waste time thinking about it. Besides, if you don't have to get your hands dirty, then why bother learning how to do so? Let other 'less ambitious' folks have the 'dirty jobs' - while we focus on our skill sets on something more clean, socially acceptable, and profitable. My generation seems to be the first that unknowingly began a silent campaign against manual labor.

Anyways, it's 2 AM in this part of the world, so I am going to wrap things up. I hope that people here (especially the younger folks) are sharp enough to understand that I'm using a broad brush-tact for the sake of condensing a thought. Still, whether anyone agree's or disagree's with what I said, one thing remains absolute: I couldn't even build a freaking bird-house, and I still really don't give a ****. :)

Is this what you had in mind Sean?
My opinion is because, in his generation he is an anomoly! My generation for the most part did everything ourselves mainly because our parents went through the Great Depression and taught us how to save every penny we could. Now my older son is only 26 and he does it all himself. He just bought a house and is doing everything himself. I'm proud of him. . .and I'm proud of John in that he tackles more stuff than even I did at his age.
