as long as the media player one uses isn't "smart". A DVDP (or whatever) hooked to the internet can be "updated" any time, with... well... whatever changes the updater wishes to enact. Seems like it would be pretty easy to block playback of a specific title or, say a class of discs, via firmware.

Agreed; I'm thinking that would not be a pleasant experience if a fella happened to be using the can at that point in time.

Yes, it's been a thing for many years. Gary Kaufman has one (or more).
