Re: Always wanted one of these...
I picked up a Rotel CD11 Tribute and I am rather pleased with it. While it may be slightly lacking impact, the sound stage is super.

Re: Walking Stick Pool Cue
Clear lacquered. I used a satin clear on the brass to tone down the shine.

Re: What did you do to your stereo rig today?
Tested my buddy Steve's new acquisition in my system, which is a Denafrips Enyo 15th DAC ($699 not incl. customs duties), Regrettably my Squeezebox Touch with the Enhanced Digital Output app installed, did not recognize the Denafrips and we just got the spinning wheel and "DAC Not Recognized".
But even using a 10 ft. USB printer cable from his HP 17 Laptop to the Denafrips and an iFi Gemini 1m USB cable to the Onkyo Integrated, it totally bested my SBT to iFi nano iDSD to Onkyo! I mean blew it out of the water! Even the bass was better. Low level cymbal details and resolution were incredible.
I would upgrade to this in a hot minute if it had worked with the SBT output. Regrettably, we did not try the coax on the SBT to the Denafrips. Not sure why that would've worked when the USB didn't but we have to try that too. He took it with him back home which is pretty bad manners lol.

Re: "It's Raining all over the world".
I did not realize that this CD is as rare as a hen's tooth now. Yeah, if you see it? Snag it.
They are only going to go up in cost from here on out.
Tom
Happened upon a copy on eBay and hammered the Buy it Now button, posthaste. Enjoying a first spin of it as I type. Thanks for the recommendation, Tom et al.!

Re: Thinking about trying a tube amp. Thoughts.
Watts are overrated.
Tom
Too true. I just repaired a Mark Levinson 331, and I’ve been A/B testing it against my Carver Silver 9t pair. The carvers put out a solid 600 wpc, and the Levinson is rated at 100 wpc. There is zero difference in either of these in their ability to drive my NHT 3.3 speakers (which are somewhat difficult to drive). There are MANY differences in the amps otherwise, but you would never guess there is a power disparity between them by listening.

Standing back with my arm outstretched, fire extinguisher on the table (I’m not kidding), I tapped the power button this morning. Standby mode activated without a problem. Next, the moment of truth…
a second push of the power button. Relays clicking, then a solid red light - so far, so good. A quick voltage check across the test point (capacitor) shows voltage within 2v of spec! We have a heartbeat!
all 4 voltage points are very close, but the service manual advises a TWO HOUR warmup before adjustment. Another quick check of the binding posts shows no significant DC offset either…:-)

Just got all the settings - voltage rails x4, bias x2, and DC offset x2 - done, and got the whole thing reassembled. Going to grab an old pair of bookshelf speakers to test it out, before moving it into my 2ch system…
