I have made the drive from Houston to El Paso and back the next day (22hrs of driving), it's brutal. 22hrs of driving will get you from Houston to LA, CA.

Monday 12/30...I drove from Del Rio to Galveston county, grabbed parts and clothes, then on to Dallas ...11hrs windshield time.

I had a colleague in my first biotech job (in Cambridge, MA) who was on his honeymoon in Hawaii when that (1992, apparently) hurricane hit.
It all ended well, and he & his wife are married still.

Thanks! The fire was closer to a friend's house, and got within a block or two, but no damage. The fire burned away from us, but we did get quite a show from the aerial ballet show from water droppers, and a near endless parade of apparatus driving by our house. Thank God the winds shifted a bit and died down.
