While I'll be the first to acknowledge that the 21st Century has brought us some impressive technological advancement, we've clearly lost ground with some amazing technology of the past.

Yes but the 5802 and others in that 4 digit series were not common ground.

Only the original Adcom 555 was a Nelson Pass design IIRC. The 2 and later versions used a Darlington configuration, which strayed away from Nelson's design.
