Could just be the result of a bad failure that allowed high current to go where it wasn't intended. 50/50 chance of that or misguided plugging. Not sure what type of amps those speakers had, but chances are, the amps aren't with fixing. Can those speakers be reconfigured to just run off amplified speaker output? Given they were curbside pickups, there are quite a few diy options to consider.
Put them on the side of the road where found is the best option.
