Honestly the RTi12 enclosures are questionable enough that its ok. I have literally separated the front baffle with my hands. Polk only made that iteration for a year or two before completely changing the cabinets.
Id spend the $300 and tell him to scrap them.

The very light weight (next to nothing) boxes are at the input end. The settings of the impedance switches are low, mid and high. You select the setting that falls within the input impedance of whatever its connected to.
For example, the low range is 5-50kohms. Say your pre amp input impedance is 40kohms, so you would set the switch to the low setting.
