This led to me (as a small child) writing the code to program the game of Pong. Many here probably don't even know what that is. That was on a high falutin' (at the time) 'puter by the name of Timex.
Now, I have really lost the younger crowd here...

Looks like a carbon cake, to me. The rapid and delightfully exothermic dehydration of sucrose by a concentrated acid (typically sulfuric). A great science class demonstration... at least back in the good ol' days...
EDIT: I see the microwave platter, so maybe microwave-induced and somewhat less rapid dehydration of carbohydrate... same net effect. Probably smells like brown bread.
