I literally never noticed this until today…

Agreed; I don't see any watch out for anvils falling off cliffs characters. -

Oh... when I was a postdoc, we brought in another postdoc in the lab who was just like that.
Actually, his shtick was more to ask for advice, then to argue with the advice he got.
He was also obsessed with being successful. Career-wise, he did OK, but he simply wasn't the hotshot that he thought he was.
As my father would have said: He had a lot to be humble about.

That reminded me of the time I worked on a film with Rip Torn and I heard him say: "Some people are educated beyond their intelligence."

She was never attractive.
I thought she was attractive back when the movie Gia was out, but things went downhill fast after she dated/married Billy Bob. Hasn't recovered since. -

I could not identify Rip Torn or the two people in the photographs.
Thanks for enlightening me.

I always got a kick out of the name Rip Torn... Genius.
If I had a child and my last name was Dent.... -
Arthur Philip Dent?

-
Nope, Scratch... with a middle name that starts with N.
-
oh, in re: Rip Torn...
I have always assumed that the Hollywood glamour he-man (so to speak) character on The Beverly Hillbillies, Dash Riprock, was a portmanteau (of sorts) of Rock Hudson and Rip Torn, with a dash of Dash thrown in.
Maybe it's just me...
EDIT: Jeez, me and BBCode are not getting along this morning...
-
Forgot about Dash.
But, I do remember Ann Margrock. -

When Jethro wanted to be a movie star/stuntman, he came up with a name to match others. (Compared to: Dash Riprock, Crunch Hardtack, Bolt Upright, Race Burly, and Biff Steele.) Jethro became known as "Beef Jerky".

Rip's real first name was "Elmore". He told me that when he was a young actor, he kept getting introduced as Elmer and Elmo, so he changed it to "Rip".
-
Crunch Hardtack is a great Hollywood name.

Of course, now I am thinking of Race Bannon* who, wasn't, technically, even extant in corporeal reality.
_______________
* which, I'll grant you, sounds weirder than it's actually meant to...
-
Seeing “Race” there reminded me of another cheesily animated cartoon character: Clutch Cargo.
-
oh, yeah... that one had the superimposed image of human lips moving when people talked, didn't it?
Talk about creepy.
Clutch Cargo -- sounds kind of inappropriate, doesn't it? Call me old-fashioned, but I believe that one should never clutch one's cargo except in the privacy of one's own domicile -- or with another consenting adult involved, and I would think that a safe word is a must.
-
Yup...
