You know you're getting old when........your girlfriend tells her son she's dating an "older" man and he jokingly asks, "older??? What is he like 65?" and he's hit the nail on the head

Well this is serious s^$t about growing old.
My close neighbor decided to be taught how to play chess. After years of hinting how I could slowly and simply teach him, he said Let's start. 3 nights ago he started. He picked up the pieces movement parameters almost instantly, but had brain farts throughout the night. 3 hours of lesson 1. He had trouble with his lower ribcage area all night. He even went to a Chiropractor that afternoon for a diaphragm adjustment.
Then last night, he did better with fewer goofs and a lot better understanding of planning 2 moves ahead for planning attacks. 1.5 hours last night. He felt better but still rubbed his lower ribcage quite often.
This afternoon, I saw him on the street and we agreed we'll play chess tonight. He said his diaphragm area was still weird, but he really was looking forward to tonight. We agreed he had learned enough to let him START to plan attacks himself. We both know he is about to take his "first steps" PLAYING chess, and I was to try and stay quiet until he asked for advice.
I was looking forward to it.
I got a call at 4:30 pm. today.
He said he had to go to the hospital and had already given blood, and was waiting for the next step. He said some blood spec. #s were high, some were lower than normal.
He went because he saw a greyish oily(?) stool, and his abdomen/diaphragm was still feeling weird. His Doctor, on a phone call today, told him it sounded serious enough to just go straight to the hospital.
After the bloodwork #'s, the Doc on duty suggested he get a CT scan done. He did...the result....
C-word.
He just turned 60 in Feb. He's been healthy all his life.
It seems to be a BAND of cancer wreaking havoc.
It has metastasized across the bottom of both lungs, a bit of his Pancreas, and his Liver has some too.I think his stomach has some too. The print-out said there are 1/2" AND 1" masses here and there now.
He JUST started to get his messy property cleaned up WEDNESDAY by selling an older van that was kind of in the way to access his back yard cleanly. THIS cancer diagnosis changes all of his plans going forward now.
We just lost our neighbor 2 doors down from me, who is directly across from Tony's house, 3 weeks ago. He had heart/vein issues and was about 75. He aged quickly in the last 2 years of his life. He's in a better state of being now!

They gave him a Cancer Place referral and let him leave.
He came home and stopped here at 10 pm.
We talked till 11:30. He's in good spirits, but he's tired from not sleeping enough.
Maybe he'll sleep tonight. Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

While I would agree with that, there is only one problem. I have no memory of my back hurting as a child. Crap....either that means I just made my point or I am so old now, I just don't remember.
When you start to get old, you may or may not contemplate things like this.

I probably shouldn't put this in print - on the internet, in perpetuity - but this is the kind of post that can cause one* to think impure and inappropriate thoughts.

I experienced it first hand (literally). I had this understanding of what "taught to the tune of the hickory stick" meant and it wasn't used for pointing. It was many years later that I realized that line wasn't about whacking kids for talking in class, not paying attention, losing place when it was your turn to read out loud, etc. Now a days they would be jailed for the things that they got away with.
My faith in God and Jesus Christ surived because I knew it wasn't tied to a human institution, even ones that claimed to be in God's name. I feel for those who were more deeply and tragically impacted and led astray.

If you know the significance of the street names:

In Atlanta (Buckhead), not too far from Chastain Park, one can find the only intersection in town, perhaps in the world, where the streets are named after network news anchors - in this case Chet Huntley and David Brinkley, who anchored NBC's evening newscasts from 1956 until 1970."Sometimes you have to look to the past to understand where you are going in the future"Harry / Marietta GA -

I remember -- even though I was young enough not to actually care on my own behalf, I watched.
I am of that relatively short period in recent US history when young men did not have to register. -
I just found my Selective Service Card dated Sept. 9, 1973.
I was classified 1-H because of the cessation of Vietnam draft calls.
Authority to induct for the Vietnam War ended in June 1973.
The last ones drafted for Vietnam were in December 1972.
I too remember watching the drawing on live TV, very chilling!
I went to college right after high school, I would have most likely
been deferred anyway, if the draft had continued. -

Music tickles the neurons, that is why you can listen to a song and practically smell the smells of the room the first time you heard the song.
