    1 plus 4 is 5
    5 plus 2 plus 5 is 12
    12 plus 3 plus 6 is 21
    21 plus 5 plus 8 is 34

I'm pretty sure the answer is 42 though, it's the meaning of life, 42

Trey's example is what I thought as well, but like I said earlier, its hard to argue with maxward's explanation. Neither are wrong. Who knows what the author had in mind. Social medial garbage.

We now have 3 possible solutions. None are wrong. 34, 37, 45 all fit a pattern. Exactly what I said earlier. It is not real math. It an ambiguous social media post designed for clicks/shares/comments to monetize an account.

This ain't common core. Its a stupid social media garbage logic test. Not real math, but a 'follow the pattern' test. They post them to get views and comments. There is almost never a clear answer, but by my logic, the answer is 34. I'm sure others could argue something else and be correct as well.

Well....wrong again, but I will award you half credit for Consistency

There is 1 correct answer, and 1 correct answer only. 🤔👍

That's easy to say when you are not offering anything to support your conclusion. Three patterns offered in this thread all fit without any dispute. No rules given for the garbage math problem, so pick your favorite.

Second guess: 45. Edit: previously guessed, but I agree.

    Rules ?
For those of us with a level of familiarity with not only the scientificals but also with the advanced mathematicals are completely confident with the one, and only one, correct answer which is:
    45 ✅💯🧠

    FWIW:
    I thought
    1 + 4 = 5 in base 6
    2 + 5 = 12 in base 5
    3 + 6 = 21 in base 4
    so
    5 + 8 = 41 in base 3 (13 in base 10)

Expect that there will be bumps in the road. Choose to not let them rattle you.

Yes Rules. I know mathematicals just fine. This is math:

    Your puzzle wasn't math.

97.7% would fail this test ?
    WRONG

I can't help but wonder; has anyone ever used this type of arithmetic for anything useful? I haven't sat in a math class since 73 but I've yet to use anything like that to balance my checkbook.

    Contact your local cryptographer.
He'll take about 5 seconds to decipher this most basic of "puzzles" .
    🤔
    Ezy-Pezy, Simple Squezy.

Also, in the original puzzle" the author avoided the
    "4 + 7 = ? "

The answer is, of course, 32

And why did the author purposely skip that particular question ?
    Hmmm ....🤔😲

......if he hàd, then a person could guess, using the progression of answers, that the next answer would progress by 13, which would still give the correct answer of 45.

Instead he wanted the reader to decipher using the input without using the progression of answers

So, what would be the answer to
    "17 + 20 = " 🤔

You can determine the answer after a long while using the answer progression method or use the input pattern......
    (17x20) + 17 = 357

Care to try 987 + 990 using the answer progression method
    🫣😱🤯
    Not me 🤗😘
