Pretty typical for a pileated woodpecker. It doesn't even take them very long to do that.
There are a couple of trees in our neighborhood thus victimized by pileateds. I've seen 'em in the act -- but unfortunately I have no photographs of that level of carnage (well... xylage I suppose).
