one other thing I have noticed over the last few days is how lower volume friendly my system has become, and 9:00 is plenty loud enough, it really rocks the house, but push it to about 10:00 it really takes it well with ease, I know there is plenty of headroom to take more but really there is no reason to push it beyond 9:00 IMO.

    ME TOO!

I never gave this any thought until I read a comment that Marvin made about there being benefits of using the full real estate of the volume knob

Honestly, I still don't get it and would like someone . . . to Splain it Lucy!!

I have not been able to find a decent explanation on line . . . and in all honesty, I have not tried very hard :#

Apparently, there's a outfit in the UK that makes these attenuators for a reasonable price
    Maybe, The DOC @mhardy6647 will chime-in with a layman's terms explanation :D

Same here! I rarely go beyond 9:00, and at 10:00 it is plenty loud for me.

    Ok were was it made?
That name was used but the tubes were made by Amperex, Mullard, Mazda, a few plants in Belgium and one or two in the USA.

From an old 2018 post I made.

IMO Holland made (Phillips) with double D getters are the best GZ34/5AR4. Either metal base (typically uber pricey) or look for the Black base with metal base innards. I had Holland made Black base with metal base innards that were branded Mullard. GB manufactured Mullard are fine too.

Yes, yours is the metal base, and they are pricey..

That is why you can have the same tube made in the same plant, same day, branded six different ways and have just as many price levels.

That tube you have joey is a nice tube, yet not many had that kind of coin these days as prices had escalated.

Excellent. I was 99% sure I had what was referred to as the metal base version but I wasn’t sure if metal base referred to the actual base or some platform or aspect of the tube construction.

Before some folks did thorough research, they thought only metal base had the best innards. At one time, you could get the black base with metal base innards much cheaper. I paid ~ $75 each for two NOS GZ34 black bases with metal base innards.

Similar thing happened with the Bendix 6900 tube. The 6900 tube was a higher quality more durable 5687 used for missiles and military equipment. 5687, think of ModWright gear. Three years or so ago, Bendix 6900's could easily fetch $800 a pair. MU Engineering bought the Bendix Tube Division. They rebranded existing stock and continued to manufacture tubes with Bendix tooling. Before folks learned that you could buy MU6900's for $300 a pair. Norm (RIP) and I could not detect any audible difference between the MU6900 and Bendix 6900. They had identical innards.

When one refers to a "coin base" tube, does that imply the metal base? Or metal innards?

It implies that the base is thin like stacked coins or wafers.

    Loks like this

Those should be put to use and report back.
Old metal base stuff is highly regarded.
I've not had the pleasure of any old good stuff like that.

That Cary 98 was my very 1st foray into the tube world. With the 6sn7Ws in the front most position, the SQ was sublime.

If i could find 4 more at an "affordable" price I'd roll 'em all in the Cary 05. Good luck, right?

If I switch my cabling to all SE, I can get-by with using the 2 W's in the pic, in the sweet spot

    Before you do
Listen to a couple of your favorite songs, note a few details

Another suggestion, once tubes are swapped, before listening, let the pre/tubes warm up for about 20-30 minutes

Enjoy … I’m excited for you

So I didn’t swap out the 6SN7’s yet but I did swap out the rectifier tube with a NOS Sylvania tube, it’s a fat bottle tube, definitely larger than the Sovtek I took out of it..

I also put in the RAL cable.

Any SQ diff? might be a little early to tell . . . .
