Correct, it's highest in the center, but the magnetic field does exist outside. Following the round contour of the transformer isn't the best choice. It would have been better to put the transformer at the side of the enclosure to keep wiring away from it. Side issues is that the enclosure's center-of-gravity is on the side.

@mhardy6647 Isn't there a potential for negative effects/interference/distortion by having the internal speaker output wires running this close to a transformer?
Well... the idea of the toroidal PT is to minimize magnetic leakage -- so it shouldn't be as big a deal as it might be for a traditional "E-I" type PT.

I can't imagine buying a $4k SA-KI Ruby and then putting a cheap Pioneer turntable on top of it like that. Cruel and unusual. -

spent some quality time last night and this morning trying to resurrect an adorable NAD 1600 preamp/tuner that belongs to a hifi colleague who lives across the river. I did not succeed. I did get it to power on (it was dead as received, but that seems to be related to some multipin connectors), but cannot get good quality audio out of it. Assessed and evaluated all of the usual, typical issues -- 'tis a puzzlement.
Meanwhile, the preamp section in this monstrosity works OK (the power amp section is at least partly toast, so it has been deactivated)... so I offered to pass it along to the NAD's owner when I return the latter to him as-is. No phono section in it, though, unfortunately.
