Tick season where we are, in the current climatological epoch, has gotten to be nearly year round :( Admittedly it is worst in the spring and fall. I was trompin' around in the field yesterday without too much fear -- but it won't be long...

The depths of summer isn't so bad, tick-wise, at least here. Apparently one of their key tools for sensing a meal isn't CO2 emission (which I think is the mosquito's main tactic) but rather body temperature -- and the signal to noise ratio is fairly poor in the middle of summer. :|

Movement. They are blind, deaf and dumber than ship but they basically know how to climb up and reach out. Once they sense contact they grab hold. Lucky for me, I found a great deterrent besides DEET is diesel fuel.

One (the only?) nice thing of the Bay Area in CA is there are no ticks, very few flies, and only an occasional mosquito. When I lived in MD those three made life miserable in the spring/summer. I hope global warming doesn’t affect this.

As for the flu ....The virus survives better in cold weather because it has a protective gel-like coating that allows it to survive in the air and be passed from person to person; this coating degrades in warm temperatures.

Gorgeous, somewhat dangerous, aircraft was the B-58.

Convair used a slightly housebroken, twin spool turbofan version of the Hustler's J79 (single spool) turbojet engine in the magnificent (and profoundly unsuccessful) 990 jetliner.

To my way of thinking the 990 and its progenitor (the 880) were nigh-on the most beautiful jet airliners ever built. And I am a big fan of nearly all of them :|

    https://www.health.gov.au/news/health-alerts/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-health-alert

Here is the Australian corona virus statistics...and yes it's summer, but their number are low vs the rest of the world

    197 cases

    Further details:

15 of the initially reported cases in Australia all had a direct or indirect travel history to Wuhan, China

10 cases, including 1 death, are associated with the Diamond Princess cruise ship repatriation flight from Japan

18 cases are reported to have had a direct or indirect travel link to Iran

92 cases are reported to have had a direct or indirect travel link to other countries and regions.

32 cases, including 2 deaths, do not have a reported history of overseas travel

8 of these cases are associated with an aged care facility in NSW. 2 residents of this facility have sadly died

2 cases are either directly or indirectly associated with attendance at a workshop

22 cases are close contacts of known cases, with further details pending
The likely place of exposure for a further 30 newly reported cases is under investigation

Of the 197 Australian cases reported, 27 of these cases are reported to have recovered.
