EPI 180 speakers (refoamed & recapped) local Erie, PA

The vinyl cabinets are in pretty good condition. There are several very fine scratches but they can only be seen up close. I photographed the worst of the scratches, but note that I was very close with much light on the subject. From 3 feet away, these cabs are very presentable. With that being said, if I was keeping these and had any woodworking skills, these would be a good candidate for real wood veneer.

The woofers were refoamed by the previous owner. One of the dust caps was pushed in. I pulled it back out the best I could, but there is still a slight dent (see photo). I rewired, recapped (Dayton) and added new binding posts. I removed the tweeter control pot per recommendation of Huw Powell at Human Speakers and my personal preference. I did this to my EPI 200C xovers also.

The grilles are brand new. I used one of the old grille frames as a template, cut new grille frames and installed new fabric. I will include one of the old grille frames. The other one was trashed beyond repair and has been tossed. The grilles were originally secured with velcro pieces on the back of the grilles. The grilles fit snugly without reattaching the velcro pieces, so I did not use them. They will be included though. The grilles can still be removed easily. In one of the photos, the grilles appear to be different colors. They are both pitch black. The grilles can also be used rotated 180 degrees, so the logos are at the bottom.

I'm asking $150 local pickup in Erie, PA. I'm 5 miles north of I-90 (from the exit to Presque Isle State Park), between Buffalo and Cleveland, and about the same distance from Pittsburgh. Auditions at my home are welcome, but I can also meet part way to either of these 3 cities if you prefer. These are also posted on another audio forum for the same price and the local CL for more $.

Nice -- and not terribly commonly seen -- pair of loudspeakers!
It is probably a good thing that I am not particularly close to you @classic carl :)

  • These never made it to my Florida condo. There wasn't enough room in the SUV, so they are still for sale. They are in PA and I'm in FL, so any sale will have to wait until April when I return.

Winslow Burhoe was and is one of the good ones.
I passed up the opportunity to have a pair of EPI 1000s a few years back, only because I really couldn't justify the space they'd take up. If you don't know (of) the 1000s -- look 'em up. :|

Being somewhat more practically minded, over the years I've given away or sold most of the EPIs that passed through here, ultimately electing to keep only a pair of EPI 100V (the bargain-basement, vinyl-clad morph of the very popular 100).

I would love to put these in our condo, but had to settle for a Polk RT55i pair, which sound really good. I can't crank them anyway because of neighbors. The outside walls and floors are concrete, so as far as soundproofing goes, I could peobably play them louder than I do.

If the EPI don't sell, I may bring them down in the future, when there is room in the SUV. I didn't get a sniff on the local CL and just a few tire kickers on the other audio forum I listed them on.

hey, man, you came all the way up here! ;)

EDIT: just yankin' your chain -- and trying to keep this thread in view; these are neat loudspeakers... but, yeah, too far for me to drive, too.

Yes I did but I came home with 6 pairs of speakers. Now that’s worth the trip
I still have the Boston Acoustics A70’s and EPI’s. I sold the others.

If anybody cares, these are no longer for sale. Somebody wanted my Paradigm Monitor 9 v1 towers that I was using as my HT fronts more than I did, so I sold them to him and moved these speakers to the HT.

Yesterday, I picked up a nice pair of EPI M90 from the original owner that I'm now using as my rear surrounds. I also have an extra EPI woofer and tweeter. It would be nice to find an empty EPI cabinet to make a center channel speaker. I'm going to replace the capacitors and binding posts in the M90 pair in the near future.

The Advents on top are being stored there while waiting for a recap. The EPI 200C that the M90 are sitting on are connected to my laptop system at the back of the room.
