No problem. The wind is supposed to pick up today, and turn the fires back into firestorms. It had calmed down for a day.

  • Yeah, the forecast calls for winds of 50mph with gusts up to 80mph, how do you fight that?

This week will be bad, very bad.

it's a cooler Santa Ana coming in. people in the back country will try to keep warm. If they turn off the electric then they will go to the fire place for heat. oops.

    Stay safe out there people.

Feels funny saying that because even as an outsider, our first reaction is for all to be safe. Wish the state felt the same way.

I read somewhere that California spends over 100 billion on "non-essential" programs, what can be more "essential" than public safety ? I always thought that was the number one job of any governing body.

Easy to pick on California, but truth is, just about every state, and the country as a whole, spends way too much on non-essential programs while letting public safety slide. Maybe it's time to simply get back to basics.....for everyone.

Nature is a powerful force, you can't fight it, just live in it's world. If your in an earthquake zone, we build buildings to stronger specs. If we live near active volcanoes, we have early warning systems to tell us possibilities are high when things might go boom. Same with flood zones, hurricanes, winter storms.

Fires though, we got nothing, except the prediction of high winds. Every other natural disaster you have a window of time to prepare, fires not so much. Our technology buys us time to prepare for such things, but fires is another animal. That's why I would think anyway, the importance of doing everything you could to avoid them in the first place, should be taken.....if one wants to live in such areas anyway, right ? I mean, common sense dictates that.

Maybe it's time to demand public safety as a top priority again....just sayin'.

I fully expect* the Governor of California to draft and pass legislation ordering the setback of trees from powerlines, and that setback made even deeper in known high wind areas. Also the burying of power lines where feasible. It would be far less expensive to contract this work out per district, then the money spent on fire fighting and recovery efforts/re-building. Home owners would be responsible for trees on their property, and if they don't comply, they will be sent the bill from contractors who would correct the set-back. This is called "sound, critical thinking skills" a gene that Newsom is obviously lacking.

*Of course that's just my silly, conservative thinking. I'll bet a years pay, Newsom does nothing but ask for a ton of federal tax-payer dollars. If I were President, federal funds would be withheld until COMMON SENSE legislation was made law, that would actually help in driving down the severity of these fire events.

You make the wind inconsequential to the downing of powerlines. Of course it's always a challenge with high winds, but that doesn't mean you act helpless, and DO NOTHING. Right now, there's been nothing done, even with the centuries long knowledge of Santa Anna winds. If money had been spent decades ago taking these power lines underground where feasible, the threat would be greatly reduced; but no, we have illegals we need to "buy."

    California's problems are "priority" based.

I think change will be demanded after this.

The solar industry has been getting a ton of calls here lately from wealthy and powerful people in Cali. Just yesterday I took a few calls from several in the Sonoma area complaining that their solar systems don't work when the grid is down. Also some are highly frustrated and stumped that their Tesla Powerwall battery backup systems can't be charged because both the grid and solar are down. I think many payed for something and did not understand what they payed for. A grid-tie solar system required a hybrid system to operate when the grid goes down. Its a more expensive system.

Anyway, I'm sure more hybrid system will be sold in Cali after this. More importantly, I think this will shake things up and cause some change in Cali. The wealthy and powerful have been outraged by it all. If this does not get the ball rolling then nothing will!

But of course you make it political.

Because California "got here" because of do-nothing politicians. Hasn't there been enough turning a blind eye to it, or shall we burn up some more forest? You can't fix an issue if you're not going to be honest about the problem.

The Reagan Library was under threat earlier today, though it looks like efforts to save it were successful. Simi Valley’s west side along the 23 freeway is were the big fight is in SoCal today.

John I read that helicopters have already dropped 2.1 million gallons of water on the Kincade fire, and that the air tanker has dropped a little over 1 million gallons of flame retardant. Crazy.

Just about every hill and mountain in southern California is a wild fire area. So long as they like to have houses there houses will burn. There should be an ordinance that requires you to build your house underground. Why should everyone else subsidize you living there by paying for utilities to put their stuff underground?

^^ yep, don't forget the hurricane prone areas of the right coast and gulf. May be they should build houses on stilts where it floods....lol.

How come no one politicises those areas misfortunes.

Yep... New Orleans should be evacuated and moved to higher ground, as it is 20 feet below sea level...

There's not much timber to clear in the Gulf of Mexico. Hey, if you don't mind watching your state burn down, oh well. Must not matter much to you, otherwise you wouldn't keep defending the way things are (not) done.

Perhaps the immigrants everyone is so worried about could be recruited to help fight the fires. You have to admit, these people generally work their tails off compared to the average American.

Gee it's not about politics it's about stupid policy.

Power lines in high wind areas need to be kept clear, they are not.

Fire roads and 100 yard fire breaks need to be cut.

Need to resume controlled burns in the winter. Cal Fire did a few in San Diego last winter then got sued to stop.

Other thing to look at is funding, Since the 2003 fire look at how much more funding has gone to Cal Fire and local fire departments.

Most of those areas now require homes, etc. to be elevated above flood levels. Of course, New Orleans is a different story. The next time it floods and it will, they should either leave it or call the Dutch for help.

Florida's New building codes are very good. I had 0 damage from IRMA. Older homes built before the new code are subject to catastrophic failure and cost 3 to 4 x as much to insure.

Many newer homes on the coast ARE built on stilts and some are required. After a few bad hurricanes coastal Florida addressed it pretty well.

When you saw photos of the destruction in Mexico Beach from a year or so ago you could see the diff between the old code and the new code.

The old wooden structures got mangled. The newer concrete block and roofs withstood the storm.
