I haven't had enough ears-on experience with them to have a strong opinion, but it's safe to say that these didn't catch on either
This was one approach to strong, stiff, light materials to make 'truly' pistonic driver (mostly woofer) cones -- in the days before easy availability of today's fashionable paper alternatives for speaker cones (Kevlar, carbon fiber, various flavors of plastics, etc.).
I don't know if the foam cones have as horrific out-of-band frequency response anomalies (breakup modes) as today's wonder materials
1960s Electrovoice 12" foam cone woofer as used in their Regal 400 loudspeaker system. Note that hard plastic dustcap, too! Borrowed image.

Y'all needed to know this!
Interesting history on foam Doc! Is there anything you don't know about speakers?
Hmmm, IMO foam seems to be, at least in my biz, not the right material if you're trying to control bending stiffness. Yeah you can re-formulate it, add fibers, etc, to stiffen it up, but seems to me there were better materials to start with.Basement: Polk SDA SRS 1.2tl's, Cary SLP-05 Pre with ultimate upgrade,McIntosh MCD301 CD/SACD player, Northstar Designs Excelsio DAC, Cambridge 851N streamer, McIntosh MC300 Amp, Silnote Morpheus Ref2, Series2 Digital Cables, Silnote Morpheus Ref2 Series2 XLR's, Furman 15PFi Power Conditioner, Pangea Power Cables, MIT Shotgun S3 IC's, MIT Shotgun S1 Bi-Wire speaker cables

I reckon that's true, and I further reckon why we don't see many foam coned drivers any more... and I even still further reckon why the Bertagni/Fisher speakers I've heard were... well... not so great.
EDIT: Oh, did anyone mention that Fisher sold some speakers using the Bertagni panels for a while? :P

Whatcha talking about?
OH WAIT.... you meant like this????

hey -- someone else used PRs kinda sorta like that for a while in the late '70s/early 80s.

I think that's more like foamed polyurethane than Styrofoam (foamed polystyrene) though.

That VPI is a NICE table. I had a MKIV.......if you are into tweaking, the sky is the limit with those. They tend to have a warmer, more rounded sound than the Scouts but, that's a nice piece of kit......
500 bucks ain't cheap but for that level of table....while I don't know what the market is on them....you get a lot of great sound.
