  • I heard that State Farm stopped Hurricane coverage years ago. You guys that live close to the coast, just how expensive is coverage for wind and water damage? I really want to move to the SE coast in the future. These storms kind of give me cold feet.

So it depends on how up to code your construction is...If you are up to code it is way cheaper.

As you can see from this pic we are pretty close to water. Sykes Creek off the Banana River is about 300 yards from us. We pay about $3,200 a year for insurance. That is with a 2% Named Storm deductible.

  • When we moved to NW Fla,, Our previous ins company (USAA) did not cover homes in our area anymore,, so my ins is about 1500.00 per year,, and flood ins is 480.00 yr. we do have impact windows and doors,, metal roof with roof clips,, so that helps a little with the premium.
JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

At the end of August, it looked like it was going to hit and possibly cross Florida into the Gulf to become another Katrina.

It's amazing to me how wrong they can be. They have the most sophisticated state of the art computers and analytical tools on the planet, and well, it's mother nature! :)

If I was so off on my analysis at work I'd get fired! :)

Learned my lesson in 1989 with Hugo. We had just bought a house on Wrightsville Beach two weeks before it was forecast to hit us, hehe. Spent the critical night in town (Wilmington) worrying without any news or data. It ended up hitting at Charleston beaches and did worse damage 200 miles inland in Charlotte and Hickory than it did at Wrightsville. Blooms were still on our oleander.

Somewhere on the NHC site they mention they're right about 2/3 of the time (outside the cone a third of the time). Pretty good imo, but not good enough to (literally) bet the house on.

My goal: Prepare for the worst and pay attention. Then take advantage of the post-storm exhilaration and get some stuff done.

Re: @Tony M , I am sure he's okay - we had very little wind and rain in town; no twisters were reported in his area.
