I just picked up a Modwright SWL 9.0 preamp for right around your budget. This is my first step into tube gear and it sounds great. A definite jump in performance from even my McCormack RLD1 pre. I was thinking about buying one of those Schiit Freya pre's previously mentioned but then came across this. Couldn't be happier for the money paid.

Cary. My humble $0.02. The solid state CPA-1 that @treitz3 has available is a very solid choice. No pun intended :D

Not trying to get you to spend more than you are comfortable with, but so far the only preamp suggested that ticks all your boxes is the Pass X2.5... it just isn't at your price point. I have a call into the seller to see what his best price would be on it for you. This is the one piece of gear you will own that you never feel need to upgrade from, and worth exploring.

My gut is telling me $1250.00 will be enough to get him to sell. If you can do the extra 4 Benjamins, you will never be disappointed that you spent the extra coin. So confident am I in that statement that I will buy it from you if I am wrong...

Where do you sell Schitt ?

I'd refer you to George Carlin's classic routine Shoot from his album FM and AM.

There's a Warren Zevon song that's, perhaps, appropriate in the context of the recent tack of this, uhh, discussion.

I don't think it would be a good idea for me to post a link to it here, though. Even the title is NSFW, as it were.

Find a used Cambridge Audio 840E. My Pass pre was recently broken, and while it was being repaired I used my 840E in its place. It was 80%-90% the equal of the Pass XP-22. No lie.
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.
  • It is easy to rip on Schiit, but they really do make excellent gear. The new Freya+ is a major improvement over the original Freya and rivals preamps many times its price. I run it in my main listening system with a PS Audio Directstream DAC, PS Audio M700 Monoblocks and Focal Electra 1028 Be speakers and could not be happier, especially given the $899 price tag new which represents an outstanding value. I could be running a BHK preamp costing $6k, but absolutely do not need to do so. It is fully balanced throughout with 2 x XLR and 3 x SE inputs and 1 x XLR and 2 x SE outputs. The tube stage sounds amazing but turns off when you switch to JFET or Passive (the original Freya did not switch the tubes off). It comes with a remote and has a 128 step relay-switched attenuator with 0.625dB steps. If you don't care about tubes, the Freya S, which is solid state, can be had for $599 new and provides all of the performance of the Freya+ sans tubes. Good luck.

Nice ad for Schiit. Have you ever listened to the PS Audio BHK preamp?
