[Ken, I'm terribly sorry, I did my best to obscure, but this is important.]
I just had a run-in with the second of the two.
Now you know. And knowing is half the battle.
The other half is a full on, dark hour assault with Night Vision Goggles and Delta Dust.

Funny, earlier in the day I did a search to determine whether the bees I found nesting inside my shed wall were honey bees or yellowjackets. They were the latter, and so faced devastation once night fell. I soaked the entrance with some wasp spray and the buzzing inside the wall got so loud, I couldn't believe it. We'll see tomorrow if I'll have to apply a second dose. If so, I'll probably try some powder, too.

I had a basketball sized paper nest full of Bald Faced Hornets on the fence by my patio around this time a couple years ago. The nest was obscured by some ivy. There were news reports of a couple of ladies in the region killed (allergic reaction and shock to being stung multiple times) by that kind that summer after they had disturbed nests hidden inside azalea bushes.

I had my regular exterminator come by to knock the nest down early the next morning after I noticed the nest. Interesting thing was there were no other insects on that side of my house that month. While it was active, I could walk right up to the nest and look at and it didn't seem to bother the hornets. They also post guards in a perimeter around the nest, but it seemed it would have taken deliberate action against the nest to get them stirred up. If the nest had been up in a tree where they normally are I would have just left it alone.

Yellow jackets are smaller and pack much less of a punch but I'm more concerned about them since they hide out underground and swarm up if someone steps near their hidey holes.

    LOL that was good :D

He did not have a solid exit plan in place for the first round.

I laughed a few times during this. Funny dude. After he threw the empty Roman Candle at it, and came back with the water and the foldy stick thing, with the way he was leaning forward, as if standing that extra half step back was going to make any difference in his ability to get away. And when he started swatting himself - I think he was starting to imagine them crawling on him during bits of this, 'cause that's what happened to me when I went back out in the yard after I got stung last night, and there was nothing there.

I thought they were going to flip his vehicle over there toward the end.

I figured wasps do have their place in the ecology, but they're just too sketchy to have around in areas I might inadvertently disturb them. I think the best I can do is make sure I take a look around more frequently and do my best not to provide places for them to nest. If I do find nests, knock them out early on.

He had the right concept, wrong band. You need to sing them children’s songs as to not get their bee testosterone all jacked up. When he ran, i think you’re supposed to serpentine as if running from a croc.

Bee’s hate anything to do with the Romans so the candles were a sure fire bet to anger them.

Also, giving the bees a bath only further p*sses them off. If he used soap, he would have done the trick (seriously, they breathe through their skin so the soap clogs their pores, or some BS like that) I loved how he though if he got “low” that he’d somehow be under their radar.

Finally, i don’t have a flipping clue what that wood contraption was but i liked his “whisking a cake” technique. Really stirred them up!

Yellow Jackets are nasty critters. They don't seem to need any provocation for going after you. We had a nest in the wall, behind the electric meter. The front of the house is all cinderblock. Plenty of hollow space for them to build their nest. Tried everything to kill them. Had to wait for the 1st hard frost, then caulked all around the meter.

Our friend had 3 yellow jacket nests in their backyard. They were massive, and instead of hiring an exterminator, they just moved, because they’d been wanting to move anyway.

I've read about the "killer bees" a little here and there over the years. I thought this was an interesting, quick read/skim. They're no more venomous than other bees, but much more aggressive at guarding the hive, and apparently quick to jump to conclusions where threats are concerned.

They are relentless, once they sting they release a pheromone and you are a target for every bee in the area. They will not stop and you can't out run them. My buddy ran 300 yards and jumped into a water tank.

His wife and kid were there and they didn't receive a single sting.

It's happened out there a few times, you can hear the swarms from far away, it's creepy.

I posted this once before. This was in between floor joists in a basement garage where a small section of drywall ceiling was open. It was dripping honey on the floor. I've never seen something this extensive inside a dwelling before.lrmaoa3dpppj.jpg
