Does alien life exist?

Personally, I think it does, and it is just a matter of time before we find each other. I sure hope this announcement by Anonymous is true. This will be one of the biggest events in history, and should change the world. Hopefully, for the better. Although that is being really optimistic.

Then again, if it is true then The Stupid People will say it is just another government conspiracy. LOL . :)

A matter of time before we find each other??....They found us ions ago...Like Bowie said...He'd like to come and meet us..but he thinks he'd blow our minds...Government and especially the military knows a heck of a lot more than they are willing to admit to us 'common' folks...

Looked at from the perspective of possible alien lifeforms, humans are the aliens! So yes, aliens obviously exist.

If space really is infinite then there's a 100% chance that life exists somewhere else. Will we figure out how to travel space before the sun blows up or we kill ourselves is the question.

Yes, many of them frequent this board. So much for the intelligent life aspect.... :p

It seems numerically impossible for there to not be intelligent life somewhere in this giant universe. That said, if they're so technologically advanced that they can get here from thousands of light years away.........we'd better hope they're friendly b/c we're not winning that battle.

WOW this is a nice friendly topic.

So here are my two cents on it.

Life in the universe is either abundant or rare. I like to think it's abundant and it will be just a matter of time till we know for sure.

Now the nut job in me thinks the governments of the world are hiding the fact that they know of alien life.

Big question is are we as a population going to be able to handle it if/when the little green men do show up. will it be mass panic? Aliens show up with advanced power, transportation and medical, how will the markets fare? I don't fear them taking us over, if they wanted to they would have already done so.

We went to the moon in 1969 followed by several more landings. Why did we stop? we could have been on mars by 1995 if we didn't. did someone tell us to stop?

All in all this topic can be beat up forever, Just please be civil to those with different opinions.

I believe there has to be life out there, but its to far away to ever visit them or for them to visit us. And we have never been visited by Aliens.

Warp speed/light speed isn't ever going to happen and the closet star is 2 light years away and that is just to far to even go there.

If we are lucky we will find a real radio signal, but it would have taken so many years to get to us there is now reason to try and send a message back!

    just my thoughts.

I think you have to define what you consider "life" to be, exactly.

If other organisms exist in the universe, they may be as small as a virus or bacteria. "They" could be complex organisms that are infinitesimally small compared to an "average" human being. Just because we cannot see something or communicate with it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist or that it lacks intelligence.

IIRC, most of the world's oceans still haven't been explored fully and who knows what life forms are yet to be discovered on this planet alone.

There are extraordinary and amazing creatures, here on Earth, that can survive in any number of environments (including the vacuum of space). For example, here is the Tardigrade:

    Odds are that it does.

Odds also favor, I reckon, extraterrestrial life being made of the same elements (mostly C, H, N, O, and S) and of liquid water being a crucial part of the recipe.

What will be really interesting (sorry to go all molecular biologist on you all) will be questions like will it use a nucleotide-based coding system for self-replication, will it use the same bases? Will it use the same absolute stereochemistry as life here (e.g., L-amino acids and - mostly - D-sugars)? Will the 'currency' of energetics be the same or analogous (tricarboxylic acid cycle, photosynthesis, use of high-energy phosphate bond carriers such as ATP)?

The existence of extremophiles on earth (e.g., the organisms that inhabit the bizarre conditions of "black smoker" vents in the deep ocean) speaks to what I like to call the "plasticity of life" & bodes well, I think, for the development of life elsewhere -- even though the temperature range at which water can exist as a liquid is fairly narrow in the great scheme of things!

If we learned how to create worm holes or bend space/time...
I believe that if man can imagine it he can do it some day.
I think it is much more likely that there is life out there somewhere in
one of the 13 or so dimensions.

I agree though. The energy to get there makes finding life a non-starter.

    My .02

One would have to be a very shallow thinker to believe we are the only living planet in the outer space. If those pictures sent back from the Hubble space telescope showing many many solar systems many hundreds of light years away are remotely true then chances are very good. IF they do come here then we are toast. IF they can make it here they are light years ahead of us.
Then again we may very well be the scum biological experiments on somebody's microscope slide.

I think it's human arrogance to think we're alone. There are billions of Galaxies. There are billions of stars in our own Milky Way Galaxy, and perhaps millions of those stars have planets.
How many extinctions have there been on our little marble? Imagine how many planets did not have extinction events, and have lifeforms millions if not billions of years older than man.
Many may have forgotten what we know about space.

I think we should build a spaceship.
    I'll fly it.
    Russ can wire it.
    Darryl can cook.
Doc can plot our course and tell us stories.
Ron and Rick can take turns changing the pinups.
Steve can decorate since his wife says he's fruity.
Cragar Craig von Craigenstein is in charge of main engineering.
Jesse, Ivan and Brock are in charge of Alien Welcome and Relations. Wait. Let's just pencil that in for now.

I believe they have come here, created and destroyed several times over already. The sad part is when all the reality is exposed, the governments and religions that fail due to the chaos will lead to our next extinction event.

This subject makes me recall the first time I viewed a super high resolution image of Hubble's deep field exposure... And then read the caption associated with it... "Every point of light within this field is an entire Galaxy..."
    06nl0owdj5wf.png
That's a screenshot, but you get the idea...
Now add that to the fact that the image is only 2 arc seconds of view angle and then multiply it by the rest of the 'verse that isn't covered by the image, and the idea that we are alone is inconceivable.
