Two of my favorite performers of all-time are Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (The Turtles, Mothers of Invention, Flo & Eddie). I have been collecting everything I can get my hands on by them for close to 40 years now. From sunshine pop to acid rock to comedy these guys could do it all and are still going strong today.
I have tons of material on vinyl and CD as well as some digital only bootleg material.
They grew up as friends in California and started in a surf band of all things (The Crossfires). Eventually they would go on to form The Turtles and play material from Bob Dylan and the Byrds to their own psychedelic rock classics to an outrageous form of comedy rock they perfected with the Mothers of Invention and eventually went on to their own brand of warped mania. You could tell by the end of the Turtles that these guys were definitely nuts (and extremely talented too).
I’m focusing on their Turtles material tonight. I have their EP collection on CD and their individual album releases here in front of me. There are too many releases to list them all but this one greatest hits compilation has probably sold more copies than any of their other records. Originally released in 1984, it was one of the first CD releases from Rhino Records.The Turtles – 20 greatest Hits (1984 )
