I am sitting at my kitchen counter having a cup of coffee the house is somewhat quiet as everyone is sleeping. What I notice is all the noise around me The furnace, the fridge, the clock ticking all this noise is right next to my main listening area. So I start to think about all the other sources of noise and how detrimental it must be to what I like. That is good clean sweet music.

In my opinion we can spend all the money we want on the best equipment but that nasty blower, or washer, or microwave, or whatever the source does more harm to the quality of your listening experience than anything else.

As I write this the fridge and the furnace are going back and forth, the clock is ticking away. I just want to unplug the whole house except of course my music.
Just thought I would throw that out there.

I moved my refrigerator to the garage, installed three 20 amp lines, and have Shunyata power conditioners on each line. Noise exists, but it is manageable.

I did a few recording studios when I was in NYC. You can go crazy isolating your listening space. Sound traps in the ductwork, insulated and gasketed doors, triple glaze windows with insulating window treatment. Structurally, there's a lot that can be done as well.

Sounds to me like you had a chorus going on there. Just a thought....maybe simply tune those pieces and dump the system. Might be harder if that clock is a Coo-coo clock.

I can hear my clock tic and fridge dump ice when it's dead quiet, don't have a furnace being in SoCal, but when I'm spinning a record I don't hear the clock or fridge.

This is why we listen to music louder to overcome the hair dryer or vacuum and furnace. I find the rhythm of the furnace fan quite enjoyable and can add a remix quality to good opera or country music. Although with country music I prefer to augment the half beat with the sound of a shotgun to add some emphasis.

I start on the theater room soon. As opposed to sound getting in, I'm trying to keep away from the rest of the house. None of the walls will be in contact with the wood trusses above or the adjacent walls in the basement. 2x6 framing all around with a gap between said trusses above.
3x3 angle iron attached to the Ht walls projecting to the concrete foundation walls adjacent. Welded to cross beams and lagged into the concrete. Fortunately the air handler is about 25' away from the room so hopefully the noise will be diminished through the duct work before it gets there.

That is true Dave. But lesser air registers whistle like a mo fo. Gonna up size the supply lines. Same volume but less mph at the end run. 12X14 return air set low to keep it cycling.

Floor or ceiling mounted? If floor mounted, line the last 6-8" of ductwork, put the control damper up-stream before the lining, and use an oversized register with no control damper in it. If ceiling mounted, do the same procedure, except eliminate the register altogether. Mount a baffle about 3" below the ceiling, directly under the duct opening. The baffle should be at least twice the area of the opening, with duct liner or some other acoustic damping material facing the airflow. The bottom side can be painted to match the room.
Insulated flex-duct will naturally absorb some noise/vibration from mechanical equipment, and if sized properly noise generated by air movement.
Steel ductwork on the other hand, will transmit all kinds of noise/vibration extremely well. If using steel ductwork, consider a canvas collar to decouple it from mechanical vibration.

Gotcha....but somehow doesn't seem appealing to the opposite sex when in a bar....having a big charcoal filter strapped to your arse. lol

I have an axial fan sitting on top of the Onk. I can hear it between tracks if i listen hard, but once music starts its totally forgotten.

I think of it this way, live music (the holy grail, right?) is NEVER played in a pristine environment. Take the lab coat off, sink into your listening chair and enjoy the music.

I have two 12 volt 120mm fans cooling my cabinet. They're Vantec Stealth fans running off a 9VDC adapter plugged into the switched outlet on the back of my receiver. I also have an inline speed controller that I adjust so they're just below the noise floor in my room.

You could modify a gas mask with silencers instead of fume cartridges. Trick is getting said significant other to wear it 24/7

Lightman1, on that note; I can appreciate a woman that can belch like a lumberjack. I thought it was one of Madonnas most redeeming qualities. It's cool because you don't expect a petite, pretty little chic ripping a diaphram belch. Kinda like a girl with a baseball cap on......you feel me?
