I remember these Nikko units and you're spot on Red about Nikko going with the digital led bars instead of vu meters in the early 80's. I had a Nikko cassette recorder in 1983 with the led bar meters.rednedtugent wrote: »sounds harsh to these old ears w/ the RT-7s hooked up to them.
I haven't cleaned anything yet... o.k. at 3-4 on the volume dial.
It has this mono...stereo...wide pot?!
It can do MM/MC. It seems like the one's I recall except bars instead
of VU meters. It's also not much of a looker. Could be headed for
the garage.

This is quite true.

I must have an early/mid 70s NIKKO 6065 receiver @34 watts a side. There is a beautiful green diffuser w/ a signal strength and tuning meters that work. I have crap cables on it right now and haven't cleaned it up yet but, did anyone find a good pairing for this Nikko? It's got some stupid laminate on that didn't hold up well after 30 years. (no foresight) That 6065 at 34 watts looks real nice LW57. That mid 70's sound is what I started with.

Nice looking receiver! One of the few makers I have yet to hear. But, supposedly, Nikkos are one of those brands that flies under the radar. It's hard to find a "bad" sounding '70s Japanese receiver IMO.

Nikko made some decent power amps in the higher end of the Alpha line if I recall.

Nice! Gotta get the 7's back in the mix myself.
Well done. -
Klh model 23's & Advent Advent1's. Typical plant pot stain on klh's otherwise they look great. Advents need surrounds so add it to the project list. Hope to try the klh's on the sansui later & maybe on the tube amp if i like the sound. I enjoy Advents alot so im wondering how these guys sound. Gonna test tweets before i put too much into them.

Very nice!
KLH have a very smooth/musical sound that LOVES tubes. I've been trying to find a lower powered tube amp (on the cheap) for my KLH 17s (while they sound nice on vintage ss amps-they go to the next level on decent tube equipment)-they won't have that razor sharp resolution and detail of a modern speaker but you "won't care"!
Plus the 23s have nice cabinetry. Rumor has it they're more the size of a KLH 6? So a little bigger with more bottom end than my 17s.
And Advents benefit from a little power. I run mine on a Pioneer SX 3900 (120 watts x 2).
Enjoy. (Oh, I know mhardy doesn't like the Advents but every collector should have one good set, IMO. Especially if you're a big Kloss fan, which I am).Currently orbiting Bowie's Blackstar.!

I just don't like them as much as Polks ;- )
And yes, I have some Advents here -- coupla pair, actually. They're very common in the Boston area (imagine that).

this is more of a local blast from the past...

@mhardy6647
You really seem to know your vintage HiFi. I have a pair of the large Advents with the ''fried egg tweeter'' (if I'm using the correct slang). But mine are not the usual color. How many diff. types of tweeters did they use ??

Well he sure fooled me then "but" then again that's not all that diff. to do.

Criminy, he's on to me! :-P
There'a a great thread on "identifying your Advents" on the Speaker forum at audiokarma; I think it's a sticky there (i.e., easy to find); that can probably help.
I am not all that "up" on Advents 'cause, with Matthew P. & company in the hood, they really weren't all that popular by the mid-70s in B-more.
The other excellent resource is www.classicspeakerpages.net for many New England loudspeaker brands.

Nice! And nice Tigers, etc. Reminds me of when I had to come back from a year in the PRC with a GIANT White Tiger plush that I had bought my daughter for X-mas in Beijing (it was the year of the Tiger). Wasn't sure security was going to let her on the plane with that, but it's in her room at home today!

... sort of like the reindeer pelt I picked up at Arlanda (the airport) in Stockholm when I was spending a fair amount of time working with Swedish collaborators. I had kept looking at them in the airport shop; they were (are) very beautiful and very inexpensive. I finally bought one.
I fretted all the flight home about what I'd say about it to US Customs. When we landed at BOS, we hit Customs and Immigration just behind a planeload of passengers from some Central or South American point of origin. I told the agent I had a reindeer pelt and he laughed pretty hard. "Did you see the stuff the previous planeload were trying to bring in?" he said. Of my pelt, all he wanted to know was "Is it alive?"
"Not currently" I replied cheerfully, and he waved me on through.

I've always been curious about the Kloss speakers. You see them come up once in a while on CL. Tell us what you think.
Cleaning house today, I decided to dust off the Realistic STA-2270 and was pleasantly surprised that a mid-eighties receiver still had the sound of older Ratshack products. This was probably the last gasp before the Black-faced age?

Initial impressions of the Koss; not bad.

Right, John Koss not Henry Kloss, lol! My what an interesting yet understandable slip! Have Henry on the brain.

Comparing them to the Altecs -- even then, yeah, kind of large.
Koss CM-1030s; kind of interesting. The spec sheet says 74 lbs each (medium-weight by local standards). The manual's available at hifiengine, FYI and FWIW :- )

I actually bought a number of Koss headphones back in the day.

Mark, we bought a beautiful reindeer pelt in Vail Co. back in '68, it was gorgeous and softmhardy6647 wrote: »... sort of like the reindeer pelt I picked up at Arlanda (the airport) in Stockholm when I was spending a fair amount of time working with Swedish collaborators. Haven't checked in here in a while-
cnh: Nice STA-2270! I'm a fan of the old Realistic gear, particularly the early '80's and older stuff. But I've been thinking I'd like to have one of the "newer" receivers, like a 2270 or 2280. By most accounts they're pretty good. Actually, I've been looking at the 2500 and 2600 which are a little newer still, and really were the last decent ones RS sold.
While we're talking Realistics, here's one I just finished working over. This is an STA-72. I bought it on the auction site and I'm sure I paid too much for it, but I liked the look of it, and it's a bit of an odd-ball. It's not in any of the catalogs. Just from the looks, I'd guess it to be in the '76-'78 range. It's made in Korea, and has walnut-look vinyl on the case. The output stage is NPN, quasi-complementary, and it's apparently rated 12 wpc.
I found specs and a little info about it on AK, but I think they're fairly rare. It was listed in the auction as "working", but... When I got it, it would power on and most of the lights worked except for the color-changing dial pointer. It had a terrible hum in all inputs and FM only worked on one channel. I re-capped it which cured the hum (it was actually coming from the phono amp and bleeding over onto everything else). Replaced the driver transistors and a shorted film cap, burned up resistors... LOTS of the electrolytics were bad: Not leaking, but just open, dead. Basically went through the whole thing.. but now it's working well and it's a cool little unit! Kinda has a "Sherwood" look to it.. I know I need to learn to take "before" pictures too, and not just "after", but here are a few more:
