Emotiva ERC-1 Buy-In for demo

Kex, You stirred the pot alright. I agree a couple of things you have pointed out but again, this demoing plan need to go forward.

I would not want EMOTIVA pick a select player and shipped for demoing purposes as well as I like the player to be in the CP for further demoing to other members. While I can't definitely ask other members in the group to forget about draw and expecting something for less, I think contributing is a good cause and keeping it for others to demo is even a better cause.
But I feel certain EMOTIVA will not send a Free Player for sure since they don't care less for Club Polk.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -
Payment received, LessisNevermore!
Face... I appreciate your input. As ideal as it would be to have a free demo unit to borrow, we ARE getting a good price on a player that we never have to return.
But since the raffle is "silly", what were your thoughts on the player once we're done demoing it?
We could just keep it in the CP family for future demos... This was megasats suggestion. Any member at any time can pay $20 + shipping, which can then be invested in future demo gear. Makes sense to me.
But this is a community demo--NOT just my "baby". So everyone's input is important. And I don't want to take away from those who have already contributed in hopes of winning the raffle.
In any case, those who contribute twice as much deserve two entries in the raffle. That I plan to do. But please give me your thoughts, guys. Time is ticking away! -
Wow!! I can't believe how something this simple can cause such a ruckus. For $20 you get to listen to a new CD player on the market, you get to describe your findings...good, bad, or indifferent. And to boot you get a chance to win the player (a $400 value).
If your not interested in participating that's fine. Dane's doing a nice thing here & let's just keep it as simple as possible. I think everything's fine as it is.
One minor point I agree on, is what Kex suggested. The people who decide they don't like the player, should be left out of the drawing to win it. If they don't like it, they probably don't want to own one.;)
This gives a better chance of winning it to the people that did like it.
Dane-I'll contribute another $20 on Friday. I can't spare the extra money right now, but will be able to on Friday when I get paid. I'd love to have an extra chance at winning it, and it doesn't seem like we're getting as much interest in the demo now.The nirvana inducer-

When money is involved......it does become a bit more complicated. Kudos to Dane for taking this on and keeping a level head and being open to the discussion. No type of demo program is going to be perfect.
I too am surprised Emo didn;t just loan us one.......but it is what it is.
I really don;t have an interest in this unit, but if someone in my neck of the woods gets a demo perhaps they'll invite some of us other Polkies over for a listen, if time permits.

Both Duell and I are in on the demo. Perhaps we can schedule a RAS meeting when one of us has the demo unit. Currently I don't have a dedicated CDP(though I may by the time I get the demo), and I'd love to have a couple other CDP's on hand for comparison. The nirvana inducer-

Tell you what then, we'll do the drawing after everyone has had a chance to listen. If it's not your cup of tea, you only spent $20+ to find that out first-hand. And in addition, contributed to the success of this forum.
I will get this ordered in the next couple days... I just need to get a few more contributions so I'm not eating TOO much up front.

Dane, sending you another $20. Think waiting till everyone's demo'd the unit to decide on a winner is a great idea. Dont mind throwing $40 at this at all to hear what all the hype's about, and a chance to win the player on top of that if i wish.:D

I guess I don't really understand why Emotiva KNOWING that this is a demo unit makes any difference... I explained to them that this was an opportunity for positive exposure on their Reference player. In fact, I'm quite hoping it performs remarkably well. (Though I only have my Oppo as a comparative, so that's not very fair...)One other thought: you may want to consider requesting that all results should be kept secret until everyone is ready to reveal their impressions, otherwise initial impressions may unduly influence subsequent listening tests. Just a thought.
I agree. Can everyone agree to type up their review and post only after the demo term is over? Please also include gear used, and what the player is up against. Good thought, Kex. -
Dane,
I prefer the player for CP to be treated as any other order. I don't want EMOTIVA to knowingly go through an extra mile to make sure the player is tested and to make sure all is well before shipping. A simple quality material comes from a good company is that all player to be inspected, QC'd and makes sure working to the SPEC before shipping to the Customer.
From what I gather in the past about some EMOTIVA amps, Quality Control has some issues. Since the ERC-1 is fairly new in the market, there is not a lot of words out for the QC issue. While we are going an extra mile to shell out some coins from our pocket to demo the ERC-1, I think it's well worth investigating their normal QC procedure without the EMO pay extra attention to the Demo unit.
One more thing I want to mention is that I have no communication with any other member whatsoever except with Dane for a few things we ought to clear up. People expressing their opinions is just participating in this one way or the other too.
To Pearsall,
I am not asking to change rules and it wasn't my intention but some rules are worth discussing and revising so make this community effort goes smoothly for everyone (not for some members). I hope my good intention was not mistaken for.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -

No problem, but I am kind of in the same position you are in as far as having my own shoot out. All I can do is write up what I hear, compared to what should be far inferior gear.
As far as Emotiva knowing this, I can understand what mega is saying, but we are not Consumer reports, we are just a group of guys on an audio forum. As far as I know this is not for CP but for a few members of CP that showed interest in doing this. Not sure they would spend the time ($$) to hand pick and test a unit just to send to us. Maybe they would, I just doubt it. If so then who ever ends up with this will be extra lucky. As far as this being any sign of quality, if they just grabbed one off the shelf and shipped it, and we put it through the paces with out issues, what would that tell us about quality? Not much it would only be a sample of ONE. You need to watch various locations for reported problems, and happy reports, to form any opinion on the QC. -

What makes you think that the cdp will be cherry-picked? The boxes are sealed at the factory. I think the 30% off is the only special treatment we'll get here. Frankly, after seeing the way they are routinely trashed on this forum lately, I'm impressed that they turned the other cheek and offered the discount.

It's just a common sense to doubt that EMOTIVA will play it fair when they knew they are being bashed in CP before. It's common sense to doubt that EMOTIVA will avoid any embarassment if they knew what's coming their way.
But I hope you are right and EMOTIVA will not cherry picked the player for us. But what makes you think that they can't seal the box again? After all, they are the manufacturer of it and they have everything they need to be in factory shape. I really don't want this to be cherry picked but discounts are very appealing. So, it sounds stupid to forgo the discount and pay the full price for it.
Since EMOTIVA knows that they are being bashed in CP, they should stand up and proof that they are a good company. When they do, I'll buy two XPA-1 and ERC-1.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -
Ideally, this would be a Consumer Report type test where the CDP is anonymously purchased. But, there really is not to much they can do. I doubt if they are going to qualify every component, and hand build the thing, just for a review that few will ever read.
Now when stereophile reviews it, that is a differant story.

I think so too. EMO will do just fine for as long as there are people who believes in Reference Class Stuff can be bought for 1/10th of the other brands.
I wanted to find out their CDP is of a Reference Class and I think that's why it started out.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -
I'm sorry but PLEASE we are NOT that special. The results of this demo are NOT going to be written up in any major magazine where people might take notice. Even if the results were posted in say Audioholics it still is meaningless.
I remember reading about official reviews being done & faulty equipment be sent & having to be sent back. They know that in this economy money is tight, so they are more then willing to give a discount, especially if it might generate more sales, but to go out of their way to micro-manage a specific player is a bit much. Thinking EMOTIVA to micro-manage a specific player is a bit much for me too. But it's preferable that EMOTIVA don't know why we are buying the player in order for us to make true unbiased review of the player. From my experiences, there are CD / DVD players that arrived new in box but will not read any disc.
But you are right that EMOTIVA might be willing to offer discount in the tight economy. In fact, could you please try buying one for us with the same kind of discount without mentioning anything to EMOTIVA? It'll serve the purpose of ordering through a normal channel and still keeping the discount. Do not get me under the wrong impression but just thinking it might actually work.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -

So, let me get this fact straight. The discount is not for CP group demo and EMO is not providing any discount for the demo product.
Sorry for my misunderstanding, Folks! I think I've missed the post about this in another thread.
So anyone should be able to buy the Open Box (B Stock) item with 30% discount if they have one in stock?Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -
Dane,
$20 sent via PayPal. I'll be interested to evaluate the player according to the plan but I am officially Out of the raffle for it.
How many more people do we need to get this happen?

Thanks Dane. I can't pull it off myself, but I would rather hear Polkies opinions than a review. Different gear and different ears go a long way. If a local Polkie jumps in I would be interested in doing a hand off and be in.
Thanks again.
Ben
Edit: I took a peek at the innards of the play and it appears well built. I have been surprised at the SQ of some of their equipment, and the only thing this thing is lacking for me is SACD.

Megasat,
I'm pretty sure 30% off is a deeper discount than would be offered to the general public on open box items. But I could be wrong...
As far as accumulated totals, we're at $230 if all participants come through as expressed. So we ideally need another 3 people or so... I'm willing to toss in another $20 myself, as long my name can be in the raffle too.
Edit: Can those of you who've sent or are sending payment, PLEASE PM me your full address if I don't already have it? Even if your address is listed in your PayPal payment, I may not be able to match that up to your CP screenname. Thanks. -
