I keep seeing the trailer for this before "The Pacific" show.

It looks like another winner similar to the Sopranos.

I can't wait for it to come out. I really like Steve Buscemi in most everything he has ever done.

I wanted to bump this up to the top since it looks so good and is just around the corner premiering September 19th. Martin Scorsese is directing/writing it as least in a shared role as far as I can tell.

Yeah man I've been drooling now for months since I saw the trailers. Series recording set on my DVR!

Something tells me that it is going to be as good as, dare I say, or better than the Sopranos as Martin Scorsese is heavily involved! We shall see.

Speaking of the Sopranos; Comcast started with season one two months ago, season two last month, and now season three this month, and I haven't missed one word of each episode it's even better the 50th time.

That was pretty good. I'm gonna reserve full judgment until next week when they start getting in to the meat of the stories but so far, it's pretty captivating.

I was so whooped last night that I fell asleep about 1/3 the way through and the funny thing was each time I woke up it was still on! LOL!

Gonna hit the DVR today to watch it unfettered.

One thing though; does anyone think it would have had a better presentation in black & white like Shindler's list? Even with all the bright and gawdy colors which bowled me over, I kept thinking black and white woudl have brought another dimension to it.

Great show so far, I really like how they have captured many of the small visual details of this era and lifestyle.
I’m sure HBO is banking on this being the next Sopranos. Steve Buscemi style is so understated; he doesn’t come across as necessarily the central character.

Lol, yeah I think they played it back to back to back! :p I'm not going to say anything about it so as not to spoil it for you, but it is very well done. As far as the black and white goes, I think I'd enjoy it just as much either way.

    I respectfully disagree.
I don’t think Black and White would have been appropriate for this series. I do agree it is appropriate for some works, depending on the feeling the piece is trying to invoke.
Like many of HBO’s other major works and the names attached to this series, I’m expecting not just a story but a more accurate account of life during this era. I think some of the gawdiness is approprate. :p
Since the advent of Color, Black and White is an effective tool in evoking certain kinds of mood, IMO.

Last night was a good introduction to most of the early characters with enough story to bring you back for more. It's a good foundation to expand on. I wasn't blown away, in fact, I was only moderately entertained, but I'm enthusiastic about what's in store. I did feel that Michael Pitt as Jimmy was "off". I've seen the actor play psycho teens in other TV series, decent menace though one dimensional. Jimmy, is a complex character and I believe, is going to be one of the main protagonists. The character, a returning ware hero that had seen too much, was well drawn. I just thought his acting chops weren't up to it...a tad whiny, IMO. Hopefully, he'll grow in the role. Everything else is good to go though.

I like the show, but I can't take Gretchen Mol as Jimmy's mother. I thought she was his mistress at first.

That's kind of part of the point. Remember when they first introduced her at the burlesque show?

I think its great storytelling as usual for HBO.
For me, Fisticuffs every week are not necessary if it doesn’t add anything to the story. What I appreciate about this series is the great detail given to the culture of this period.
Someone getting shanked or popped is just an added attraction :p

It became more and more like soap opera and Hong Kong TV series :p The acting is anything but marvelous, and the stage is quite limited; tough ruthless guys seem to cry too many fricking times :D Well, maybe my opinion was shaped by enjoying too much the straight-to-the-point miniseries such as BoB & The Pacific.

What show are you talking about? I can't remember seeing a guy cry (having not seen last night's ep yet), unless maybe you count the guy whose guts were exposed and being squeezed by the psycho liquor agent guy.

I didn't say "crying out loud", did I? :p Capone & Luciano were portrayed too softly, sometimes just like pussies with no brain, not up to the super-mob-boss standard at all (you'll see how Luciano "cried" to Darmody's mom and Capone "cried" about his son's deafness as well as Darmody's making fun of him in front of his men in last night's episode; Luciano also answered Rothstein's phone call in such a dumb and dumber manner, got trapped in Nucky & his brother's dark room big time, and to think here's the big guy who would control the whole gang even from jail - from far far away Italy - from sneaky Cuba - all the way until his natural death). In my mind, they would have been more ruthless and especially much more intelligent & manipulative to later be labeled the two most notorious gangsters of all times in our country; they were to become the leaders of almost the whole US mafia clan, for crying out loud :D

I couldn’t disagree more, I don’t think many Soaps have this kind of detail and I’m not sure what you are talking about in regards to “the stage is quite limited?”
