It is a rather bad pic- hard to tell if they are the 3000's

If you enlarge them they sure look like 2000s to me.

They have the walnut finish and appear to have the bass brace, he calls it a "wall anchor." $1800 is a steal.

    Nice find!

I am looking at the information now. I left a voice message for the company.

Does Polk still carry parts (replacement speakers, etc.) for these speakers? If not, where are parts being purchased?

    Thanks,

    toucanet

Yes. You can get RD0198s to replace the SL3000s. They are silk domes and drop in replacements. IMHO they sound much better than the SL3000s. If you tell Polk Customer Service you are member of the this forum you will get a discount and free shipping on the replacements.

I replaced all eight of mine with the 198s and sold the SL3000s here.

    You can get the capacitor & resistor replacement at Sonic Craft;

    http://www.soniccraft.com/index.htm

I used SonicCap capcitors and Mills resistors on mine. IIRC Sonic Craft will also give you a discount if you tell them you are member of this forum.

What amp(s) were they using to drive these monsters?

Did anything (flaws/damage) about them stand out that is cautionary? I'm waiting for them to call me back (I see that they open at 2:00).

I would like to see more photos of them.

I did not see any issues with either of them. They sounded very good.

He had them powered with a very nice tube amp.

    Thanks for the link hearingimpared!

After speaking with a representative of the company (Tom), and my wife sitting next to me telling me to pounce on the opportunity, I have committed to buy them. I guess she is a bit tired of me spending so much time looking for "those damn speakers" according to her. Additionally she said that she did not care what they cost as long as I would shut up about losing mine in in the flood.

I will be driving from Georgia to Pittsburgh to pick these speakers up.

What is your opinion of using a tube amp versus TFM-55 to drive these speakers? I do not know much about tube amps. However, if they produce a superior sound than the TFM-55 will, I may make it worth my while and purchase one (or 2) while I am up there. The size of my two-story family room is 30 feet x 25 feet.

I bought a pair of 1.2 Tl's in November in Phoenix on Ebay. They were mint, the seller replaced the tweeters with new ones a week before selling them. I had a friend who lives there pick them up for and store them. I'm down in Phoenix right now to get them. I visited them last week and I can hardly wait to get them home . They are in fantastic shape. I'm staying here for a couple of weeks to enjoy the sun.
I had Ben make me a new cable, it is also here. Great job Ben thanks.

Chris, first off there are a few really great Polkies in the Pittsburgh area; two that come to mind are, schwarcw (Carl) and analog97 (Larry) you may want to PM them to see if they are going to be around while you are up there.

I've only heard 1.2TLs & 2.3TLs with hybrid integrated amps and the tube pre with the sand amp sounded glorious. I did hear a pair of 1Cs powered by a Manley Stinray integrated tube amp and was floored!

At one time I had a VTL 2.5 tubed pre connected to Adcom 565 mono blocks on the 1.2 TLs and it sounded awesome. I've since moved on to a Musical Fidelity Tri-Vista 300 hybrid integrated amp. That and the kw 500 I highly recommend on the big boys.

    BTW as you already know any amps you decide on need to be common ground. If not you need to aquire an AI-1 cable (they show up on ebay from time to time) or make the dreadknot cable DarqueKnight has created, here's the link;

    hearingimpared,

I will try to meet up with them while I am in the area. Also, I will keep in mind the common ground issue as I see what Vintage Hi-Fi has available while up there.

Thanks again for all of your help.

    mewisemagic,

There will be no 2nd thoughts on these beauties! I shall call them "Evangeline 1 & 2."

However, if you are interested in riding to Pittsburgh, let me know and I can meet you in N.C. Will hang around for a few hours (to rest) and come on back home.

I am leaving Georgia Friday morning (around 4:00 AM). It won't cost you anything but time.

    Good news and Bad News.

First, the good news: I drove up to Pittsburgh to check out the speakers at Tom's store. The speakers were in very good condition and sounded awesome.

    Now, the bad news:
    1. I forgot just how heavy these monsters are. However, Tom and I loaded them into the car with no problems.

    2. I left Georgia yesterday morning (5:00 AM) and arrived at Tom's place around 6:00 PM. Drank two cans of Mountain Dew and drove straight back to Georgia; I arrived back at my home around 7:00 AM (Saturday).

Believe it or not, my wife helped me unload and set up. Always a plus having a wife that works out everyday!

I am now feeling my age.

I do not recommend driving 1,400 miles in 24-plus hours with only a two hour break.

I sincerely thank Tom for his hospitality and knowledge. I would also like to thank thuffman03 again for the link.

It was truly worth the trip and the money for these beauties.

I will send pictures another time; I'm going to bed.
