Kid Directs Air Traffic At JFK

thanks Brett. you get it.. why can't anyone else see this?
some people see this as no big deal.. totally harmless. i get that.
the truth of the matter is.. he effed up, and big time where the FAA had to become involved. If it wasn't a big deal, then his supervisor could have handled it with a reprimand.
I think we all like to bend the rules now and then.. but those rules or guidelines are there for a reason.. so all hell doesn't break loose.
there is a little bit more to the recording of his son. some of it was inaudible.. words were no clear enough to distinguish.. that could have been a problem for the pilot of said plane.
He and his supervisor will prob be fired. The sup prob had nothing to do with it.. and may lose his job.. I would kick some **** if I lost my job because of the stupidity of one of my coworkers.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

I would love to do this...
Edit: I mean talking on the radio... -
I guess I'm confused about how stressful/difficult it is to be an air traffic controller. For some strange reason I was under the impression that it was one of the most stressful jobs out there, that it took strict attention to detail and people's lives depended on it.
Even if the kid's hadn't been allowed on the radio, how in the world is having to babysit multiple kids at your workplace NOT a distraction?
I think the guy was an idiot for doing it, got caught, and deserves whatever punishment he gets. No one's life depends on what I do for work, and I know for a fact I'd make mistakes and be less productive if I had to try to work and babysit multiple kids at the same time.
Is the media overreacting? Sure, that's their jobs, to sensationalize everything. Doesn't take away from the fact that it was a stupid thing to do. -
Heard on the news this morning that the next day, he brought his daughter to work and did the same thing.

The FAA didn't even suspend the controller and his supervisor until it made the news. -
So his daughter said to the pilot he could take off. Still no problem There.
NOW IF HE BROUGHT HIS DOG .....Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them. -

Have you never heard of "take your daughter to work day"?;)

The latest I've seen (just saw it) was that 2 people have been suspended from there so far. I'm assuming it's the father and his supervisor.

in what is, as I understand it, a sterile environment anything under 10k feet. I read recently that the reason for this 'sterility' is to ensure that guidelines are followed to a T and nothing is done incorrectly at any point and there's not even freelance conversation going on between the Pilots.
You are on the right page.
At higher traffic aerodromes (airports) There are typically three levels of control. One handles ground traffic (taxi-ing), one handles air traffic below X number of feet and within a Y mile radius of the tower, and another that handles X feet and higher within a 250 mile radius of the area control center (usually located at larger aerodromes). Picture it as an upside down wedding cake. Anything not covered by the cake is un-controlled airspace although the tower may try to make contact and find out what those planes are doing just in case they enter controlled space. Freelance conversation does happen sometimes when there isn't much traffic. Where I live, the controller on shift will sometimes have only one plane to deal with so there might be a bit of back and fourth, but not if there is other things going on which at JFK, I'm sure there always is!I was under the impression that it was one of the most stressful jobs out there, that it took strict attention to detail and people's lives depended on it.
Seems to be a mis-conception. Any tower or area control center controller I have spoken with has told me the same thing regarding stress: It is only a stressful job to those who can't handle stress or fast paced, fast thinking, environments. People that find it stressful apparently don't last very long if they even make it to certification. The attention to detail thing is spot on. LOTS of detail that is constantly changing. It is definitely an 'always on your toes' kind of job.
One other thing: They stress that it is extremely important to always sound crystal clear on the radio. Someone who mumbles when they speak wouldn't get in to the industry as a controller. -
If the man AND his boss are suspended, I hope it's with pay and they fills out applications for the FAA and get hired on so they don't have to worry about trivial nonsence.
What the heck is wrong with telling someone "Hey don't do that anymore".
Why the heck do people have to get FIRED over stuff as simple as this was.
I could see him going postal but for the fact of him having kids, I know he wouldn't do it.
I know what goes around comes around. All the people who wished this man ill will suffer the same at somebody elses hand later on. But then it will be a different story. It was harmless, nothing or what ever will be their reaction, but I hope they feel an unjustifed punishment more than his will be.Most people just listen to music and watch movies. That's funny right there, I don't care who you are! -

AS dumb as it was, if the media didn't make such a big stink they probably would have only told him, "Don't do it again" and post a memo stating as much. -
you got that right Joe!
Between disasters in Haiti and Chile, this one is definitely not newsworthy.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -

Not to mention the earth being knocked off its axis AGAIN! I would think that would be all over the headlines as it just happened recently from another quake. The media's got it all backwards. UGH! -
