it is one of the best airports at air traffice control, though. with an insane amount of traffic daily, I would be surprised if many airports can have fewer delays.

In the poll that was part of the story, about 58% thought this was no big deal... And it appears that the pilots involved also knew this was going on. It does not appear to be an isolated incident.

I don't see the big deal. The kid just said what the ATC told him to, it's not like they actually let the kid make the decisions.

But in my opinion unlike in regular office when we get kids on a company called for days, this is a differenct situation where in it may be a Rule or Law involved but the parent losing job is not good, probably a temp suspension should have been better option, if there was a law/rule in effect.

If you listen to the transmissions, the pilots didn't think it was a big deal. One of them even says that he wishes he could bring his kid to work. I don't think anyone was in any danger at any point. . . I understand the concern, especially in this post 9/11 age, but listening to the tapes actually gave me a smile. Love when the kid tells the Air Mexico pilot "Adios".

    "Adios Amigo" = Awesome!

Yeah, this is in no way a "big deal". The pilots were well aware of what was going on, and would not have followed any instructions without clearing it with a real controller first.

It's just a way to let a kid see how "cool" his dad's job is. The FAA needs to calm the hell down.
Should the parent get in trouble? Probably.
Should he/she lose their job? No way.

Interesting. I remember watching I think it was Chronicle here in Boston, and they had this kid shadow the Captain of a Navy or CG ship all over his ship. And The Captain & him would walk around & when crewman saw the Captain they saluted & the Captain told the kid to return the salute. Then they went to the Bridge & the Captain told the kid what orders to give the crew to pull out of the harbor.

All in all it was pretty cool. But I would assume all of this was cleared ahead of time. If this was going to happen it should have been cleared higher up ahead of time to avoid this.

Just another case of our paranoid, politically correct society making a big deal of something inconsequential. There was no harm done. The kid was not left alone. There was an air traffic controller monitoring it all and telling the kid what to say, the pilots knew of this, and nothing bad happened. It is just a change of voice, but the direction is coming from an employee, soo..who cares? Not to mention what you will do the the kids psyche is the parents get fired..kids will take that to heart and feel guilt for it. I love the fact that there are huuuge problems that exist both in our society and in the world, and we tend to focus on such trivial details, both on a social and governmental level. This is a waste of time and money as far as an investigation goes.

+1 on that! This whole incident reminds me of last week's brew ha ha when the lady Canadian hockey team was filmed sharing a celebratory cigar and champagne for winning the gold - after the rink has cleared out.

it is a big deal... people lives could have been in danger. maybe next time we can have a 6 yr old behind the wheel of a 18 wheeler rig  Would that be overracting?

think about it people.. where do you draw the line?

Most of us are not traffic controllers. so allowing kids in our "office" would not be a big deal. but when it comes to commerical air traffic. hell yeah it's a big deal.

The analogy would be apt if driving and 18 wheeler was the same or even close to relaying ATC instructions from tower to pilot. There were adults there that told him what to say and the pilots knew it was a kid reading the directives to them. If anything was wrong or sounded odd to the pilot one of the adults would have piped in.

On a case by case basis, to me this is no big deal.

If the guy gets a reprimand, fine. If he gets fired, that's the true outrage.

No biggie to me. It was actually entertaining to listen those short exchanges between the pilots and the kid. Btw, dispatch ATC (outgoing) as the planes are lining up for take-off turn is not trivial. The kid is just following his dad instructions on what to say. If it involves hand-over of frequencies once the plane in in the air, then that would be a different story. Lighten up Francis.... :)
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Worst analogy ever! (I say that with love in my heart).

Simply having the kid speaking the instructions to the pilots (with trained professionals coaching the kid) in no way puts anyone in danger.

Having your kid drive an 18-wheeler would never happen, cause how would they reach the clutch to shift??!! HOW??!!

I've spent a few hours in the tower here when I was going through the phases to become an ATC (still in "waiting game" stage). I know one of the senior controllers. Even though I had a very good understanding of what was happening, and why it was happening, I don't think there is a chance in hell he would have let me give the order for Alpha Charlie One Two Eight Five Taxi Two A to runway Three Zero let alone takeoff or landing clearance. That communication is heard by many aircraft on the ground. If he says something that isn't verbatim what daddy told him, the wrong pilot could hear and think "WTF, I just landed!" (extreme example of course)

Its just common sense. Compare it to police dispatch having a kid tell Unit 81 to head to 3042 Main Street for a priority 1 (or however the heck they phrase that). It's just not even close to the norm and could at least raise some questions by a lot of people listening. With Air Traffic Control, the last thing you want to do is have the mind of the pilots anywhere but on the specific information you are giving them. There is an insane amount of redundance and repetition in Air Traffic Control for a reason: everything must run extremely smoothly and very very safely.

In the end, I don't see it as a horribly unthinkable thing, but the controller should definitely be fired. Someone who lacks the common sense and good judgment to keep his kid off the radio has no business telling planes where to go. Some deserving 2 years out of high school kid will be glad to take that six figure job, and NOT screw it up mindlessly.

At no time does the child tell aircraft how to maneuver or where they should go.
"JetBlue 171 cleared for takeoff," the boy says in his first call. His father follows that up with a more detailed instruction for the aircraft, which was headed to Sacramento, Calif.
In a second exchange, the boy instructs the same JetBlue flight to contact departure controllers. The pilot responds: "Over to departure JetBlue 171, awesome job!"

At no time was the child allowed to relay any type of "important" information. As said before, this is being blown way out of proportion and people are taking this way too seriously.

IMHO, I don't think that what the kid said or did not say is at all important. In an industry that is so heavily governed by rules and regulations, there should never be a gray area. Sure this is only one incident, but if you say that what happened is no big deal, how much further before it becomes a big deal. Is it a problem the kid starts relaying weather information? How about frequency transfers? What if he started assigning unknown aircraft ID tags? Is it a problem if the kid starts entering the takeoff/landing strips into the system? If all else is wrong, but what the kid said is no big deal, would it be unreasonable to allow all employees' children to give the takeoff instruction regularly? Or should this only be judged on a case by case basis?

Only licensed controllers should be on the radio. Period. Keep unauthorized people off, and there will never be any issue.

My dad was a pilot. I use to fly with him to Dallas/FTW International Airport and the one thing he made sure I fully understood was that Dallas Approach was GOD. You could be on fire, going into an uncontrolled dive, while blacking out but you do not mess with the control tower. Furthermore, there is a code of conduct in the air. Professionalism ranked high and you do not want to sound like a weekend warrior recreational pilot. With all of that in mind, I can only imagine that the JFK tower in the days after 911 is even tougher. There's zero tolerance for goofballs.

The tower is respected and feared and that reputation needs to be maintained for safety reasons. They cannot have one of their members get out of line. That guy is going to get fired.
