I wish you would have included FM as a source of music. That's my most common way to be introduced to new interesting music. With a quality tuner from the 80s and a roof antenna with rotor and some interesting college FM stations you have many enjoyable music options.

Internet radio is a great way to find new music. The quality usually sucks, but as a tool just to find new music, it's awesome.

Pandora is such a good idea. I also like Grooveshark. It lets you explicitly choose the songs unlike Pandora. But Pandora forces you to listen to new music which is also a good thing.

Digital, via a portable media player....

Music downloads via lossless or WAV to an 80 gig ipod classic via a Wadia 170i transport, powered by a Channel Islands Audio VDC-9.0 High Current Power Supply and through a Cardas Lightning digital cable into the DAC of a Cambridge Audio 840C CDP.

Stunning how good this configuration up can make an ipod sound!

I too stream FLAC from my computer, through optical. I use optical so I can avoid any interference from my computer's circuitry and also completely avoid using its hardware which probably isn't audiophile grade. How are you running your signal to your DAC.

Other than at work music is rarely background music. I just get so focused on it and want to be submersed...which means I typically turn it up. (80-85?)

It's and interesting sub discussion on is your listening time just you and the music or is it background during conversation and the kids coming in and out etc.

I mainly use my Apple Tv as my music server. I record everything in Apple Lossless which sounds exactly like the cd. I have done Vs battles with Cd's both digital and analog to the receiver and I find that the Apple Tv sounds exactly the same in all respects. My Apple Tv is connected both Analog and HDMI. I use the Analog for zone 2 and 3 out for my house system. I have speakers in most of the rooms of my house including my Garage , Basement and Deck.

Whats wrong with being naked in the winter?

Looking at the poll,cd still ranks, I guess the tale of it's death is a tad bit off. I still spin those silver thingy's in my Pioneer universal, is that bad? Mark did bring back some nice old memories of that 8-track click and the loss of a few notes. Makes me want to run out and find one just for old times sake. You sometimes have to hear your past to know where your going in the future.

I won't vote on this as I use several different sources. Why limit to just one?

The poll is asking for your "main" way of listening to music. So unless you listen to your music equally across all the options, you should be able to choose one.

I choose Turntable. However I do listen to both CD & SACD not equally across the board but at times just as much as vinyl.

A modded Denon 2900 most of the time, and almost as much a TT.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.

I chose 'Digital from other' as mostly I stream FLAC from my computer to a squeezebox to a DAC.
Secondarily, if I have what I want to listen to on SACD-well then SACD is my main choice.

Of course that could be considered "Digital from Computer", but I'm not sure of the OP's intent with that choice.

And based on the category, I'd say that 'Digital from other' could also cover satellite, HD Radio, and any internet based stations (Pandora, etc)

Have you ever listened to a live FM broadcast of music with a good tuner and antenna?

Of course any FM broadcast can be screwed up with bad engineering and room accoustics.

Bikezappa,Hi,yes I do listen to FM through my Sony ST-J60 tuner and surprisingly it sounds very good.I have an old radio shack 4 element FM yagi beam on my ham radio tower.I am not sure how FM broadcasts stack up against say, satellite radio or the XM stations on my DirectTV dish as far as specs but to my ears the Fm is excellent.Since this was a poll from the original OP I was just answering the poll.My tuner has a separate funtion to tune out multipath signals and with my rotator can tune right in with the best signal.Still, even with my hearing(I am 48) my records give me the most satisfaction with music.Brad

Most of my "quality" music listening time is with my Squeezebox, being fed .flac files wirelessly from a pc in the office. I still listen to CD's a lot too, though, either through the Onkyo player in my 2-channel rig or the Pioneer Elite universal DVD player in the HT room.

I've been wondering... how long do you think it will be until we see hard drive-equipped music servers begin to take the place of the traditional CD player in today's Hi-fi systems? I don't necessarily mean a media computer as much as a stand alone component, maybe with CD ripping capability, SD card slot, or USB connection. Do you foresee that happening, or has it already begun?

I've also wondered why media companies don't move towards flash storage for music and movies. For example, instead of buying a compact disc, you just purchase and album on an SD card. Is it just the fact that blank CDs and DVDs are so cheap?

Seemed interesting for a setup. I'm thinking of a 2 channel setup that's user friendly for the wife, but also has all my stuff stored local.
