My New Mac

Words can not describe how excited I was to go get this bad boy today.

15 inch macbook pro
2.53ghz Processor
4 gb ram
Nvidia Graphics card.

Upgraded from a 5 1/2 year old powerbook g4.

This thing laughs at any tasks I as it to handle. Plenty of power and battery life. The greatest part is I can go a full college day with a single charge and still have over an hour left when I get home. The old one finally died 2 days ago over a internal power plug problem. It never gave me a single problem and I had no regrets by the time it finally died about buying it.

Here she is.:D:D

^^If you look at the top right of the last pic you can see the old mac. The tools right next to the mac were there to see what was going on with the old mac.

Nice, it almost looks too 'utilitarian' to be a Mac.

I've been kicking around the idea of getting one for my design work since they're better suited for that. The problem is getting to where my design desktop is not also my primary work desktop, because a mac can't do everything else I need for work. I also have my gaming PC, so that would mean 3 computers at my desk instead of the two I have now - completely doable with a good KVM switch though.

Actually with the included boot camp you can simply insert your windows OS disk, install it and have mac and windows on one computer. I personally am probably not going to do this but the option is there if I ever wanted to use it. Another thing is using a program called wine to allow you to run windows software on a mac. Just some food for thought.

    Thanks all,

I am a student in college so I got this and iworks for 1700 which is not bad. I did the no interest for 12 month with new apple card. Well my father did. "good credit" Anyway I know I will be paying him back one way or another.

What am I saying? Well I did not pay for it. My father has been very happy and impressed with my dedication to college and my work with college. So when I told him yesterday that mine bit the dust he said "okay tomorrow we will go look at a new one.

Ya I am still dumb founded.

1700? I thought the Mac's were getting more reasonable in price. The Mac Mini I have is something like $600, I think, which is only 30-40% premium over comparable PC.

I love it. YES (notice big cap), you need to buy AppleCare, strongly recommended. There's enough "inconsistency" if you follow macrumors forums. Besides, AppleCare has been known for its hassle-free records in replacing and taking care of problems.

You do have 1 year to decide whether you want to buy AppleCare or not. So, take your time and browse MacRumors for incidents..

There is a huge difference in performance between a mac mini and a portable macbook pro. But ya the mac mini's are around 500 bucks.

Both are with same C2D processor. I believe yours is a E7200 based on the frequency. It retails for around $100 if you can still find it. I don't know which one is on mine as I haven't really started to play around with it but I do believe it is either the E7200 or E6550. Either way, not much difference there in performance.

Yes but those have nothing to do with being faster. Both have the same graphics card, NVidia 9400M. Same processor options, same memory options. Same machines basically, the other is a laptop and the other is a mini cube.

I have nothing against them, they are nice machines, just horribly overpriced for the hardware and software you get.

Congrats, baf. I'm liking mine too. Same machine and we got iWork installed. My bud was able to resurrect my PowerBook G4 with a new 250g HD and upgraded to Leopard for us as well. Macs are good machines, but I gotta agree with Sami on them being so pricey.

    Enjoy

Nice, I did a HD upgrade on my powerbook. Was pretty simple soon I will send the old one in for recycling at apple. If it did not die I would still be using that one. The PB had tiger so upgrading this much all the way to snow leopard is pretty cool. I love snow leopard so far. Even my first backup did not take as long as the old one.

+1 on buying AppleCare. I cooked the optical on our old PowerBook while it was still under AppleCare warranty. Took it in and they fixed it at no cost and no questions asked. Would have cost us 800.00 otherwise.

I called apple support last night. One of the friendliest and knowledgeable people I have ever talked to about problems. I was having problems moving my itunes library over after a quick phone call and 5 min it was up and running.

I love me my Macbook Pro. & While some think they're more expensive than comparably equipped PC's, I've found that what the Mac gives me is more than worth the "extra" cost.

I have to agree Bottom. One thing that is bugging me a little bit. I went and looked in the settings what kind of hard drive it is. The name brand is Fujitsu and from repairing computers I know these to go bad. But I already backed up my stuff and after the warranty runs out in a year I will replace it with a 500 gb WD.

As long as you keep your things backed up and monitor the HD status, you shouldn't have to replace it unless you want more space.

I would do low level dd every once in a while, or some kind of hardlinked snapshot directory.

The built in backup called time machine works great and automatically does a daily backup as long as the external is connected. I will probably do it every 5 weeks like I usually do. I will upgrade it anyway for all my music.

I would do it daily if possible. I have not looked into time machine closely but I would think it takes use of the Unix filesystem hardlinks. This way you will not use much disk space even if you do daily snapshots.

On my home network I have something similar setup using rsync. One server that takes in the backups, from either Windows or Linux machines. I would recommend something similar to all those that have multiple machines in the house. One server machine with raided large hard drives and then automatic snapshots from each client machine that is on the network. Big plus with this is you can go back in time and look at files the way they were that day (hence why Mac called their implementation Time Machine). With regular backup you will spend more time doing the actual backup and will overwrite files instead of storing the differences.

If you do school work on it, and you change a file today and save it. Then tomorrow you realize you need to see what it looked like yesterday, with daily backups you can go back and see what changes you made. I believe by default that's how Mac's are setup but like I said, I haven't played around that much with mine yet.

I just got 4 iPhone SDK (Software Development Kit) books so I will most likely be spending much more time in front of my Mac Mini in the near future. Like I said, it's a very slick machine and I can see why people enjoy it. It doesn't provide all the features that a Linux does but at the same time a simpler graphical user interface, in terms of features, is easier to manage by most people.
